Late Bronze Age gold pendant: one end of a slightly bent round-sectioned shank has been hammered into a D-sectioned loop, while the other expands into a conical terminal on which another object may have swivelled. Formerly described as probably Roman, it has been reassigned, by Caroline Barton and Ben Roberts of the British Museum, to the Late Bronze Age on the basis of its similarity to a copper alloy example in the Boughton Malherbe (Kent) hoard (PAS KENT-15A293). Length 34mm. Width of loop 5.5mm. Diameter of shank 2 - 1.5mm. Diameter of terminal 3mm. Weight 1.89g. 9th century BC.

A Medieval cast copper alloy seal matrix of conical form. It has a faceted hexagonal shaft with a circular suspension loop. The design shows a bear walking right and the legend reads: " *TOVMBEBOSSE". Though the letters are quite clear, it is not easy to understand what this means. A similar seal matrix is NLM-359707 which has a mouse instead of a bear and again, has a legend which is not understood. Circular, non-personal seal matrices became common from 1300 onwards, with the legend and device often forming a witty partnership (Harvey and McGuiness). This example is probab…

On the flat underside is the remains of an iron shank, which appears to continue up through the length of the fitting it the apex, where a hole filled with iron can be seen. It may be that there was another final knop on top of the fitting which is now missing. A number of Roman furniture fittings or mounts are recorded on this database, including 'acorn-shaped' examples, and a given a general Roman date of AD 43-410.

A post medieval silver threepence of Charles II dating to c.1664-70. This has been gilded and pierced at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse. Clearly the intention was that the coin might serve as a pendant. The display of the king's head in this way may well also have had an ideological element. This adaptation of the coin would, in all probability, have been carried out shortly after the coin's issue. Coin issued c.1664-70, adaptation in the late 1660s or 1670s. 18mm diameter, weight 1.38g.
