An incomplete copper alloy buckle and plate of medieval date. The object is unusual as it has a rotating clasp for fastening rather than a pin. The buckle, plate and clasp are all separately made. The frame is incomplete with only the strap bar and a short length of the frame to either side still remaining. The plate is rectangular with a centrally placed rectangular hole at which point it is fitted around the strap bar of the buckle. Two rivet holes are present on both ends of the open end of the plate and would have aided in attachment to a strap. The upper surface is decorated with…

An iron buckle of Medieval date. The frame is rectangular, with bevelled edges and a flat underside. The single plate is integrally cast, rectangular in plan and has a forward-facing hook at the non-frame end. At the centre of the frame end, there is a circular aperture, by which the now missing pin would have been attached. The inner edge of this aperture is damaged. There is no obvious means of attachment, although any rivet hole would probably be obscured by the iron corrosion that covers the surface of the plate. Copper alloy possible buckle fragment. Cast fragment of lentoid section, with a discernible curvature along its length. This feature may suggest this to be a small fragment of a decorative hat or shoe buckle. The slightly convex display face bears an outer border of tiny pellets, a field which includes a T-shaped figure and another object, perhaps a leaf - both likely to form part of a recurring pattern - and an inner billeted border of three sub-rectangular blocks, again a small part of a recurring design. Suggested date: post-Medieval, 1720-1790. Length: 14.1mm, Width: 9.7mm, T…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast rectangular buckle frame with a thickened curved edge and a prominent notch for the pin. Rust staining on the pin bar suggests the pin may have been made of iron, and together with the small size of the object this may tend to confirm a function as a spur buckle.
