Lower part of heart- or scrotum-shaped strap-end in rather abraded condition, with three ring-and-dots on front face. There is an ancient break across the split end. The dimensions are: width 45.5 mm, length >33.5 mm, thickness 1.5 - 3.5 mm. Compare examples in Appels and Laycock (2007) pp.248-9. Dates to the 4th century, but was perhaps in use later.

Copper alloy strap end, tongue-shaped with a small finial at the closed end. It was made from two leaves of sheet metal secured by two rivets, one tight at the closed tip, the other more open at the bifurcation. These rivets have a diameter of 2.0mm. In London strap ends of this type were found in contexts dating between 1270 and 1400 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, Nos 609-11).

Fragment of the lower part of a strap end terminating in a cross motif. The object was formed from three leaves of sheet copper alloy one of which is represented only by a fragment in the area of the cross-shaped terminal. One of the surviving leaves represents a spacer between the two outer leaves. This spacer is marked by a tapering transverse slot which extends halfway across its width. No sign of a rivet survives and the strapend haveing been truncated with the loss of its upper section. In London strap ends of this type were found in contexts dating from the 1350-1400 (Egan and P…

Cast copper alloy strap end, generally triangular, bifurcated with a single rivet. At its end is a terminal in the form of a pointed loop. This is separated from the main body of the strap end by two lip-like mouldings. This object is difficult to parallel but resembles a series of looped strap ends which, however, are now thought to be from book-straps (Egan and Pritchard 1991, Fig 101). Ringed strap ends ends are charactorised by being hinged, a feature absent from this find. The London strap ends were found in contexts dating from 1350-1450.

Copper alloy strap end made up of two outer plates separated by a forked inner plate, one plate now missing. Trapezoid side plate with an indented top, at the lower end is an acorn-shaped terminal. In London strap ends of this form were found in contexts dating from 1270-1450 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, Figs. 93 and 94).

A fragment of a Roman copper-alloy amphora-shaped strap-end. The body is flat and triangular with bevelled edges and decoration on one face. In the wider end there is a slit to allow a strap to be attached; a slight seam down either side may indicate that it was either cast in this shape, or hammered together leaving a split attachment end. The attachment end is bevelled along most of its length, but has a slight boss at either corner. A single copper alloy rivet remains in place in the centre of the wider end, by which the strap would have been secured. The surface decoration, alt…

A probable fragment of a late Early Medieval copper alloy strap end. The fragment is flat, rectangular, and has a rounded terminal. The face of the strap end is decorated with an interlace motif in reserve metal, set against a recessed background. A parallel for the strap end has not been found, but some comparisons can be made to SF-2AE08A and NCL-DA2CE1.

The strap-end is complete and comprises two parts with an additional separate rivet (with a length of 21.3mm and a weight of 2.1g). The end of the strap would have been enclosed within a lower plate (0.6mm thick) with folded sides and secured by a top plate (0.5mm thick), which is neatly soldered at the sides. The strap-end is widest at the attachment end (with a width of 9.7mm), with straight sides converging slightly to the outside edge (with a width of 9.2mm). The sides project beyond the attachment end (by 1.5mm) with an inverted V-shaped profile. The strap-end is also slightly th…

Late Roman copper alloy roughly triangular fragment of the lower part of a strap-end, both ends broken. The break at the broad end is across a triangular panel of "chip-carved" foliar ornament, while that at the apex is across two probable openwork apertures. Hawkes and Dunning (1961) Type V A, Appels and Laycock (2007) Dragon Amphora type. Dimensions: length >29mm, width 23.5mm, and thickness 2mm. Fragment of silver or white metal, perhaps part of an ingot or cast blank for an unfinished early-medieval strap-end of Thomas's Class B. One end is broken or, more likely, cut, with a smooth facet at both upper and lower edges; the other is thickened and rounded to form a terminal. It is oval in cross-section, measuring 7.0mm wide and 3.75mm thick at the cut or break; the reverse is flattened and undecorated, and the upper surface has irregular transverse grooves along most of its length. The grooves appear to have been cast into the surface of the object, and at the broken end they …

Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper alloy strap end, 46mm long, 13mm wide and 2mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 6.61grams. The object consists of a bow sided rectangular sectioned plate which has a stylised animal head terminal with large, ornate comma shaped ears. Its upper surface has two rounded protrusions containing circular fixing holes which sit above a semi-circular recess bordered by a plain raised band. This cell contains a central pear-shaped raised motif. The rest of the surface is divided into two rectangular cells, each of which is further divided unt…

Description: Copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class A, Type 5, broadly 9th century in date. It is convex-sided, and the entire strap-end is in the form of a stylised animal head without a body. The split attachment end retains two silver rivets with large circular heads; the attachment end is shaped around these and has a small point in the centre. The animal head has elongated triangular ears which terminate at the attachment end and can be read as scrolling around (although the 'scroll' is a rather rectangular raised area) to include the silver rivets and to form the bi-convex att…

Copper-alloy strap-end of late early-medieval date, decorated in the Urnes style. The split attachment end is undecorated except for neatly bevelled edges, and has a single copper-alloy rivet in the centre of the wider edge. This then tapers to a decorated terminal with interlace in high relief. The interlace looks like it was intended as openwork but imperfectly cast, so that only one space between the interlacing strands is now perforated. At the junction of the split attachment end and the terminal, there is a C-shaped ridge around a pellet, with the open ends facing the termina…

A damaged and incomplete medieval sheet plate in copper alloy, probably from a composite strap-end. The fragment is broadly rectangular, with an intact attachment end, while being broken and bent inwards perhaps around its former centre. The attachment end is biconcave, formed of two small triangular removals. At its centre, below the central protrusion formed by the removals is a small in situ rivet that would have joined the sheet plates together. The object has a mid-green patina with some suggestions of the forked spacer in the corrosion product on the internal surface. It can be …

Treasure case 2012 T70: Acquired by Bristol City Museum Description: Early Medieval silver strap-end of Thomas Class A, Type 1. The strap end is a flat plate, split at the attachment end with two rivet holes to hold the strap, now both broken through. It has convex sides and a slightly convex terminal. The front is decorated with incised lines and indented areas but is quite crudely executed. It begins below and between the rivet holes, with an incised pelta- or fan-shaped design divided into three. Below this, the long edges each have a grooved border, outside which are very worn …

A silver plate probably from a strap end of Early Medieval date. The plate is rectangular but with one corner broken off and damage to the middle of the other long edge. The upper face is plain, but on the reverse are slight marks where there have been rivets; one in a corner, and two at the other end near the corners, but further from the short edge. There is also a roughened patch in the centre. The plate is difficult to date, but as it is from an Early Medieval productive site, an Early Medieval date is suggested. As it is probably more than 300 years old, and made of silver, it…
