A copper alloy Middle/ Late Early-Medieval (800-1000) Class A type 2 (A2; Patterned) strap-end, missing its two rivets. It measures 45.80x14.82x2.94mm and weighs 5.15g. The strap-end has a split end, convex sides and a zoomorphic terminal. The zoomorphic terminal is at the narrowest end which has a rounded point snout (4.31x1.24mm) with two D-shaped raised areas at the edges, the centre of which has a 1mm diameter punch for the eyes. Directly behind, also flanking the sides, is another D-shaped raised area with a crescentic groove below a slightly larger punched circle, 1.6mm in dia…

A copper-alloy Anglo-Scandinavian strap end, of Thomas Class B type 4 (Medieval Small Finds Datasheet 32). The strap end is an elongated sub rectangle in plan, rectangular in section on the flat areas and D shaped in section where moulded. The front of the strap-end is covered with moulded zoomorphic decoration comprising three animal-heads. Each head has large rounded ears and an angular snout. There are a pair of opposed heads in the centre of the strap end and a further head forming the terminal at the closed end. The terminal head is smaller and more triangular. The attachment …

An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy strap-end (c. 800-c. 1000 AD). This strap-end is 'tongue shaped' in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The terminal end is rounded and the attachment end is irregular due to a break. This end, where there is part of a rivet hole, is thinned to accommodate a strap. The upper surface is decorated with what is probably a simplified tree of life, the stem having branches projecting on each side. The rear face is plain. The strap-end is corroded overall and has a trace of silver on the upper surface. 40.11 x 17.94 x 4.19mm.…

A Medieval (1250-1450) copper alloy strap-end bent a little at the centre, measuring 31.52x15.87x2.69mm and weighing 3.9g. The strap-end comprises two plates, set slightly at odds with each other, both measuring 14.7mm wide at the open end. Both narrow a little and are c.14mm wide at the opposite end, where they lie exactly on top of one another. The ends have been cut in a rounded angle to give a triangular shape to the end. Both also have a rounded crescent-shaped knop protruding at the centre. The plates are fixed with a rivet hole at the centre of either end.

A Medieval (1250-1450) copper alloy composite strap-end with forked spacer plate, measuring 25.20x15.45x2.37mm and weighing 3.02g. It has a small amount of damage at the open end. The plates appear narrower than the forked spacer although this is probably due to edge damage. The strap end is fixed with a single off-centre rivet (now missing) from a c.2mm diameter hole at the open end, and another centrally placed at the apex of the opposite end. Both top and bottom plate (c.0.5mm thick) are cut at an angle to form a triangle or inverted V-shape at the opposite end. The forked spac…

An incomplete and corroded gilt cast copper-alloy Post Medieval strap end. This artefact is formed from a rectangular body with a floral trifoliate terminal. In the centre of the upper end of the rectangular body are the remnants of a now broken narrowing continuation of the body. At the opposing end of the rectangular body are two small outward curving knops, from which a central extension continues to terminate in a trifoliate knop; the two outer knops are bifoliate whilst the central knop might possibly have been trifoliate but has since broken and become worn. The main rectangular…
