A complete post-medieval copper alloy enamelled mount for a leather strap or harness. The front of the mount has a domed surface with a near-flawless yellow enamel background which sits in the recesses of the decoration. A five-petalled flower is centrally placed on the top of the convex mount. It is surrounded by an inner circle of foliage made up of five simple curls and five leaves spaced alternately, all curving inwards towards the centre from a concentric ridge. This is then finished with an outer ring of dashed lines within an outer ridged border. The reverse of the mount is …

A silver-gilt, incomplete mount or pendant of Medieval date. The fragment takes the form of a crowned lion right. The back is flat, and has sustained many scratches to the surface. The upper surface has been moulded and the lion's mane is formed by a series of irregularly shaped pellets that extend down to and around the shoulders of the fore legs. The front left leg is raised. The fore and hind right legs both have transverse breaks with the lower limbs missing. The lion is positioned passant. The tail is missing. A fragment of thin metal protrudes from the area behind the lion's nec…

A cast copper-alloy object, possibly a mount, of probable Early-Medieval date. It is roughly shield-shaped in form, rectangular in section and slightly curved in profile with an unevenly cast back face and moulded and chip carved decoration on the front face. The top of the object has extensive tool marks and a slightly bevelled front edge, perhaps indicating that the surviving object has been re-worked from a larger item, such as a strap fitting, to give it its present form. The decoration on the front face appears to be moulded, but perhaps with some re-working or chip carving. It c…

A post-Medieval (probably 17th century) copper-alloy mount. The central portion of the plate-like mount is trapezoidal. At the top is a pointed-oval projection with a protruding collar at its base; at the bottom of the mount, there is an oval projection. There are two integral rivets on the reverse of the mount, both of which have been deliberately bent vertically outwards. Only the upper rivet survives intact. Much of the original white-metal coating remains on both the convex upper surface and flat underside of the mount. Dimensions: 28.9mm long, 8mm wide, 2.3mm thick. Weight: 3.1g.

A copper-alloy hooked mount of post-Medieval date. The horizontal top side of the plate has a 'V-shaped' depression at its centre. The long sides of the mount converge towards the bottom, where there is a wider collar with incised transverse groove. The integrally cast hook is of semi-circular section, backward-pointing and terminates in a blunt end. There are the remains of two iron rivets within the plate. The mount measures 36.2mm long, 13.6mm wide, 9.3mm deep (including hook) and weighs 4.21g. This hooked mount is probably a sword-belt fitting. The suggested date is 16th to 17…

A copper-alloy mount of probable Medieval date. The sheet metal mount is sub-circular and has a conical portion, located just off-centre, and pierced at its point. Traces of a white-metal solder on the underside of the rim suggest that the mount was probably attached to a metal object. The surfaces are heavily corroded. It measures 22.5mm in diameter, 6.1mm high and weighs 1.6g. Stamped sheet metal mounts are a common product of the Late Medieval period (see Egan and Pritchard 1991: 178-179/fig. 114 for examples excavated in London).

An incomplete medieval gilded copper alloy mount of unusual shape, with pendent loop. It consists of an incomplete plate, now roughly saltire-shaped with an engraved curvilinear design with traces of gilding. The design consists of curving lines forming back-to-back C shapes and echoing the shape of the arms of the saltire, overlain by a short double transverse groove in the centre. At the top of the plate is a broken rivet hole. There is a second rivet hole at the other end of the plate, just above the loop. This is narrow, D-shaped in cross-section and emerges from the base of the p…

A complete medieval copper-alloy mount dating to c. 1270-1350 AD. A faceted mount with a sexfoil shape and hollow reverse. There are the remains of two copper-alloy rivets in situ, through the centre of opposite foils; there is also a small hole in the edge, caused through wear. The object measures 18.7mm in diameter, has a thickness of 0.6mm, and weighs 0.9g. It is in fair condition with a green patina. A similar mount is shown in Read 2001, 15, no. 102; also there are several in Egan and Pritchard 1991, from contexts of c. 1270-1450 (1991, 187-188, nos. 958-985).

An almost complete Post-Medieval copper-alloy mount in the form of an acorn. The mount is slightly convex at the front and concave at the rear. The seed is plain with a small knop at the top. The cupola is cross-hatched with an angled stalk at the base. At the rear there are two integral tapering spikes which are circular in cross-section and the tips of both are worn and broken. The front would originally probably have been gilded, although no evidence of that currently remains. Mounts in similar form and style have been published by Brian Read. An incomplete Post Medieval copper-alloy mount, cast in one piece. It has a central rounded lobe decorated with a quatrefoil, perhaps floral, design on its surface, made up of crescent-shaped punch marks; these retain traces of gilding in their recesses. There is a smaller lobe to both top and bottom, of different shapes. One is slightly smaller and lozengiform or acorn-shaped, and the other is slightly larger and shaped like a circle with part of the edge removed by a straight line. This strange shape appears to be original, and may be a casting flaw. Both smaller lobes have an incom…
