Apparently complete but worn cast copper alloy decorative plaque, possible belt fitting or mount of Roman date. The plaque (or plate) is sub-rectangular in plan and has a convex section profile from left to right. The back is plain but the front is decorated with the raised image of a boar running right. The boar is lacking detail but the eye, tusk, legs, tail & mane are all defined. The boar is closely framed within a rectangle of running diagonal lines which loosely gives the impression of a twisted rope border. The design and artefact are both very roughly executed with no fine…

Roman copper alloy object, possibly a mount. The object appears to be an incomplete openwork plate, with some extremities worn or broken off, and might originally have been sub-oval in plan. The object is assymetrical, with a roughly circular part with two curving projections, joined by a thick curving projection to two curving sides joining in a point. The circular part has indications of possible attachment points in the form of circular indentations which may represent the edges of a large rivet or patch of solder. The openwork design is reminiscent of Roman mounts and buckles, …

A cast copper-alloy three-dimentional mount in the form of a bird of possible Roman date (AD 43-410). This bird is in a resting position with wings folded, a rounded back and no feet. The head is pointing forwards and the beak is lost due to damage or abrasion. It has no eyes, possibly due to corrosion. The tail is forked and each element is rectangular in cross-section and both have breaks at the end. On the top of each element there is a pair of ring-and-dot motifs. A copper-alloy mount of Roman date. The largest element of the openwork mount takes the form of a deeply moulded, three-tiered crescent with a convex surface and inward-curving points. Contained between these points, bordered by a pair of angled mouldings, is the base of the second element, a 'T-shaped' plate. This base is bulbous and has a vertical groove at the centre. The distal ends of the top bar of the 'T' curve downwards, into damaged vertical ribs, which join up with the sides of the crescent. The underside of the crescent is hollow. A Roman mount, 43-300 AD. Petal shaped mount, rounded at one end and gently pointed at the other. A central hole is slightly off-centre and the mount is D-shaped in section. There are scratches and gouges on the surface. The roundedness and the metalwork quality make the piece more likely to be Roman however an enameled example has been dated to the medieval period, though this piece is more tapered at one end: see LIN-9D5607

A group of three Roman copper-alloy phallic mounts. All three mounts are of very similar form and size. Each is 'T-shaped', the phallus itself being of triangular section, its straight sides gradually converging towards the raised, moulded tip. An incomplete copper-alloy mount of Roman date. The central portion of the symmetrical mount is octagonal and contains a solid square surrounded by four openwork trapezia. There are three projecting elements surviving, although it is likely that there was originally a fourth of equal form. A cast copper alloy belt mount. The mount has a convex oval dome set in the centre of an incomplete, flat rectangular or oval plate. The perimeter of the plate is badly abraded. The dome is divided into two by a line down the centre. There would have been two integral flat headed shanks on the reverse but on part of one remains. This mount is similar to the range of 'vulvate' mounts known from many military sites. Some mounts of this type have been found with an integral suspension loop for hanging a pendant at the base. An example of such a find comes from Niederbieber, now in the…

An incomplete copper-alloy mount in the form of a sitting bird. The bird is three-dimesional and has a solid oval head with a long beak. The body is convex, pointed oval in plan and has two incomplete stubs of metal projecting from the rim on the underside. These two tabs would have joined to form a circular loop. The object has a mid-green patina with small areas of pitting on the surface. The bird depicted resembles a duck and other similar examples appear to support this interpretation. A complete, Roman, cast, copper alloy, phallic mount. Phalluses were a popular representation and unlike the situation today were openly displayed on public buildings. They were sometimes worn by the military as amulets or good luck charms to ward off the evil eye. They could represent fertility, masculinity and strength. This example has two small, now broken, integral attachment pins one at each end on the back which is otherwise recessed. There appears to be little wear and an attractive even brown patina which may be due to the water logged ground conditions in which it was found.…
