A corroded and bent cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve; they are slightly asymmetrical. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. The buckle frame has corroded to a mid-green colour. One loop has been bent downwards as a result of old damage and twisting. Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been …

A slightly worn and corroded cast asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. This example is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. One loop of the buckle is D-shaped, while the other is rectangular. There is a central notch on the upper surface of the outer edge of the latter. In general the lower surface of the buckle is flat and undecorated. The edges of the upper surface are bevelled internally and externally. The buckle has a mid-grey colour with some traces of red-brown corrosion product at the centre of the pin bar suggesting that the pin may have be…

A corroded and bent cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame of asymmetrical form. One loop is trapezoidal while the other is D-shaped. It is slightly rabbeted at its outer edge. The upper surface is bevelled shallowly from the internal edge to the external; the lower surface is flat. The pin is missing. An incomplete mid to late Medieval cast copper alloy single loop D-shaped buckle, mainly c. 1250-1500 AD. The remains of the buckle consist of the D-shaped buckle frame with bevelled inner edge and an offset and narrowed strap bar. The outer surface has ample remains of tinning, which seems to have covered both sides of the buckle originally, but the reverse has little left. It measures 16 mm long, 11.8 mm wide, 2.64 mm thick; it has an 11.33 mm long strap bar and weighs 1.59 grams. Cf. Whitehead 2003, Nos. 53-54.

Incomplete Post Medieval buckle with cast copper alloy double loop buckle frame and cast strap plate both decorated with all over moulding. The frame has one surviving oval loop with slightly widened outer edges, the other loop is almost completely missing with only short stubs projecting form the strap bar and ending in old breaks. The front and back are bevelled and the front is decorated with a raised rim around the inner side of the loops and a raised foliate pattern (the pattern is described by Whitehead (see below) as vine scroll). A Medieval copper-alloy buckle plate.
The piece represents the upper plate of the buckle, the lower plate having been lost in antiquity. The surviving plate is rectangular, has serrated horizontal edges and a pair of rivet holes at either end, those adjacent to the pin slot retaining the rivets. Towards the frame end there is an incised shield, its longest axis parallel to the horizontal sides of the plate, containing two chevrons. Traces of gilding adhere to this design and also survive around the rivets. There is a crack running diagonally across the plate due it having recently b…

A corroded fragment from a cast copper-alloy medieval composite buckle frame with forked spacer. The fragment consists of the very beginnings of the frame and the thickened spacer, with remnants of the narrowed pin constriction. The spacer has a sub-rectangular aperture next to the frame; the prong is all but missing. The spacer is slightly recessed on both upper and lower surfaces to accommodate the missing plates. The buckle frame and spacer have a dark-grey colour. Similar examples of this buckle type can be found in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 78-82) where they are dated to the mid …

A copper-alloy frame from a Medieval single-loop buckle.
The frame is 'D-shaped' and of oval section, gradually expanding towards the centre of the outer side. The now-bent axis bar is much narrower than the rest of the frame. The pin is missing.
Dimensions: 16.3mm long, 23.3mm wide, 3.9mm thick. Weight: 3.14g.
Study of similar buckle frames found at Meols, Merseyside, suggests that they date from the late 13th to early 14th centuries (Egan in Griffiths et al. 2007: 88).

A copper-alloy single-loop buckle of Medieval date.
Approximately one third of the frame survives, the rest having been lost in antiquity. This frame is unusual in that it takes the form of a strap-loop, an item made for the securing of loose belt straps and not usually forming part of a buckle. The axis bar is of circular section, the surviving portion of the horizontal side of rectangular section and there is also an internal projection at the plate end. The sheet-metal plate has been bent around the axis bar, forming two roughly rectangular sides. The upper plate, which is slight…

A corroded, worn and considerably bent cast copper-alloy buckle of medieval date, probably a spur buckle, incomplete in as much as it is missing its pin. The frame and plate have been cast in one piece and terminate in a hook. The buckle has an oval frame (length 19.5mm), with a central lip on the outer edge. Opposite this central lip at the junction of the frame and plate is a central circular perforation, which would have held the now absent pin. At the exterior edges of the junction between the frame and the plate are two small highly worn knops. From these knops the plate of the b…
