Silver-gilt buckle with a triangular plate, recently broken in two pieces. The oval loop, of D shaped section, is cast in one with the plate. It has a false shield-on-tongue composed of two stepped, crescentic panels, each decorated with a band of interlace now obscured by corrosion. The base of the tongue is an elongated oval, the tip is now missing. At the junction of the loop and plate, on each side of the narrow flange bordering the latter, is a garnet-inlaid collared boss with a beaded rim. One of the garnets is a cabochon, the other is flat-cut and was presumably a replacement i…

Oval buckle frame, with pierced lugs behind the bar in which a (missing) spindle for the attachment of the pin and plate would have been fixed, and with an animal-head knop in the centre of the outside edge. A wide moulded groove in the top of the bar and a narrower one in the animal head would have accommodated the pin. A shallow channel along the top of the sides and outside edge is inlaid with silver, some of which is extant. A complete buckle of this type, with frame, pin and plate, excavated in Norwich (HER 373), is discussed by H. Geake (in Emery, P. EAA 120, 2007, 199, fig. 5…
