Cast copper alloy gilded oval brooch dating to the late Roman period, i.e. the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. The object is oval in plan and both obverse and reverse are extremely worn. On the reverse, none of the spring or hinge housing, pin or pin rest survive, while, on the obverse, almost none of the enamel, glass setting or goldwork remain. The brooch was composed of one central raised glass intaglio or a glass or gemstone which is surrounded by two moulded ovals with punch-decorated gold inlay on the raised ridges. The goldwork was decorated with X- and zigzag punches. The type is…

An incomplete late Iron Age to early Roman brooch of Langton Down type, c. 1st century AD. The head, crossbar, bow and fragment of catchplate are present. Some of the spring is also present within the cylindrical wings. The head looks as though it has a punched dot decoration creating at least two triangles just above where the head joins the bow and two incised horizontal decorative lines just above that. The bow rises gently from the head and then falls straight down to where the foot is cut inwards at either side before the bow ends. The bow has a double vertical raised rib running…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Developed T-Shaped Brooch, dated to c. 65-160 AD. The crossbar, head, head lug and part of the brooch body are present. Although the spring is missing, a small corroded fragment remaining at the end of one of the crossbar arms indicates that the spring was probably composed of iron. The spring hood appears to have curved around the spring in a half-cylindrical manner and a portion of the lug on top of the head suggests that a portion of the spring chord passed through it. The head lug is part of a small serrated rib running down the centre of th …

An incomplete, cast copper alloy, Iron Age brooch, dating from 600-400BC. It has a strongly arched hollow bow; the sides of which are flat and the upper portion of which consists of two angled, flat facets that meet in a slight ridge at the top. At one end of the bow, and set at right angles to it, is a small, rectangular catch plate with a shallow, U shaped groove to take the pin. Above the catch plate, a short way up the bow, is a projection consisting of a single flat disc decorated with three concentric recessed rings. An incomplete copper alloy Early Medieval bow brooch, circa AD450-550. Identified by Helen Geake as a small-long brooch which is imitating a square-headed brooch, due to the lack of relief ornament. The lower bow, footplate and pin are missing and the surfaces of the object are abraded. The damage is not new. The head of the brooch is a sub-rectangular plate with rounded corners. An integrally cast rectangular lug is present on the centre reverse of the plate. The front surface of the brooch is not decorated although it is possible that the punched dot decoration often present on thi…

An incomplete cast copper alloy early-medieval saucer brooch. The brooch is in poor condition, possibly not of the best quality originally; the brooch is sub-circualr and retains only a small fragment of its flared rim; an anthropomorphic face maskdecorates the front of the brooch, depicting hairline, eyebrows and nose, open oval eyes and an open mouth. No evidence of gilding can be seen, and the reverse of the brooch retains only a trace of the catchplate. Although usually face masks are seen on button brooches, this example is too large to qualify and is therefore labelled a saucer …
