Seven Roman coins, discovered between December 2011 and December 2012 in a small area of a field. The group comprises one gold solidus and six siliquae. Most of the siliquae are clipped to a lesser or greater extent. Siliquae are rare as stray finds and this group, together with the gold solidus, clearly represent a dispersed hoard of Late Roman gold and silver. The silver coins have seen some wear and the fact that most are quite heavily clipped would seem to place the date of deposition a few years into the fifth century, probably circa 410. The coins are: Theodosius, solidus, mi…

TREASURE CASE : 2012 T341. The hoard contains a total of 66 coins, most of which are damaged to varying extents. They were found in two batches. Batch One: The coins were found in a roll at a depth of c. ten inches, leaving no doubt that the coins all represent a single group, presumably originally representing a rouleau of coins held together in a piece of cloth or leather. The coins were delivered to the FLO for North Yorkshire on May 10th, and to the British Museum on May 11th. The coins have not been cleaned or otherwise treated since their arrival at the BM, but were …

12 silver hammered pennies. The report by Dr. Barrie Cook is as follows: "...a group of 12 coins reported found in the South Northamptonshire area. Eleven are official silver coins of the kings of England, Edward I, II and III, including a penny from the anomalous issues of Berwick upon Tweed. The four pennies will be over 90% fine metal. Seven of the English coins are halfpennies of Edward III's Second Coinage (1335-44), which was struck to a less fine standard, but are still 83% silver. 2012 T253 Report on Five Medieval coins from Ansley, Warwickshire Five Medieval silver pennies of Edward I (1272-1307) and Alexander III (1249-1286) were discovered in close proximity to each other by Messieurs Knight, Caluori and Ostrowski at Ansley, Warwickshire on 26th February 2012. The pennies, from their appearance, are more than 10% silver, and were issued between 1280 and 1286 AD. The coins close proximity when discovered, the date of the coins and the wear pattern of the coins indicate they were, in my opinion deposited together. As the coins were deposited together, co…

All the coins were recovered from a very small area except the halfgroat which was found a little distance away. The coins form a tightly defined group and clearly went into the ground together, whether as a purse loss or (more likely given the fact that no small denominations are present) as part of a concealed hoard. These coins probably represent only a small proportion of the hoard originally concealed. Description: A group of 14 silver coins of Henry VIII, groats with one halfgroat. One of the groats is represented by only a small fragment. All are of his second coinage dating fr…

A group of silver hammered coins fused together by corrosion. There are approximately 25-30 in total, but the condition of the coins makes it impossible to indicate the exact number. Only three of the coins have more than a fraction of one side visible, and even these are heavily worn and corroded, making a precise identification impossible. The finder discovered the coins in his scrap bucket in April 2010, but does not know when he found them, nor which county he discovered them in. The findspot could be Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, or Suffolk amongst others. Neve…
