Treasure case: 2012 T134, disclaimed, returned to finder. Description: Silver thimble, split down the side and at several points around the rim and bent open with the top missing. The outer side is covered in multiple rows of small, closely spaced indented sub-square pits a part from a band by the base. This design is known as waffle-shaped and may indicate it was made on a lathe. On the band are incised two horizontal lines with a motto between them: BE YT + AS x GOD . WYLS cx, in Roman capitals. The last symbol is broken across the split but appears to be an alpha or cx. An addit…

Post-medieval silver thimble. The base is reinforced by a square-sectioned encircling bar with butt ends and attached with solder. The sides are of sheet with a butt seam running up to the separate sheet top, which is also attached with solder. The whole object is slightly distorted and there is one dent. Immediately above the base a ring of tiny ovoid indentations gives the impression of cabling and a similar frame surrounds a rectangular panel on which is a faint maker's stamp C with a small illegible motif followed by an inscription F * C The remainder of the surface including the …

A complete, damaged and misshapen closed silver thimble (c. 1727 AD). The lower half at the outside appears to be plain and close to the rim it has a maker's initials: HB with an illegible hallmark. The upper half and the crown are indented. The lower half may have been decorated but due to damage and wear it is not apparent. A maker's mark comparable in Jackson is dated c. 1727 but with the illegible hallmark the date is uncertain (pers. comm. Caroline Barton, 12/04/2012). Height: 15.87; width: 23.79mm; thickness: 7.29mm. Weight: 5.36g.

Incomplete and squashed post-medieval silver thimble. A vertical butt-seam has sprung apart and the separately made dome is missing. The letters KW, possibly the owners initials, are engraved within a plain band around the base defined by two encircling lines. A narrower band is left plain at the top. The sides are covered with waffle-like indentations on which are reserved three squares, each joined to the next and to the upper and lower plain bands by short plain strips. This style of decoration, on two-piece silver thimbles of this method construction, is now quite frequently encou…
