A gilded silver composite hooked tag; the back plate is trifoliate in plan with notches around the edge. The reverse of the plate has damage where the loop was originally attached and is now missing. There is also on the lower lobe a discolouration where the separate hook was originally positioned and has recently fallen off. The hook, however, is not missing. It is a sub-U shape in profile, has a circular section, with one terminal tapering to a sharp point, the other flattened and originally soldered to the back plate. The outer face of the back plate has a large hemispherical boss …

Treasure case 2012 T149. Description: Middle or Late Anglo-Saxon hooked tag made from gilded silver. The tag has a flat, broadly circular plate with eight semi-circular lobes forming a scalloped edge; some of the lobes have rather angular corners rather than being smoothly curved. At the top, three of the lobes are pierced by circular attachment holes for attachment, and opposite them at the bottom is an integral complete sharp backward-curving hook. The plate is decorated on the front with an engraved design forming an elaborate cross-and-circle motif. In the centre of the cros…

Treasure case 2012 T146. Description: Gilded silver hooked tag with zoomorphic decoration. The tag has a flat oval plate with two projecting flat semi-circular lugs at the top, and opposite them an integral backward-turned hook. The lugs are pierced with circular holes, and slight raised rims around the holes on the reverse suggest they were drilled into the plate from the front. The plate is decorated on the front with an incised design within an undecorated border separated from the central design by a groove. In the very centre is a tiny Greek cross formed from a groove, wi…

Silver hooked tag of sub-triangular form with two attachment holes, the decoration on the plate originally inlaid with niello, and the upper right-hand corner broken away. The decoration consists of a lobed and scrolled foliate design around a central 'V'-shaped motif, with a lightly ribbed border on the two longer sides. The back is plain. Discussion: The hooked tag is a typical example of a well-known class of later 8th- and 9th-century allpurpose fastening used to secure clothing (including gartering), and purses and small bags. The lobed leaf and pendant scrolls of this piece reca…

Post-medieval gilded silver composite dress hook. Trefoil back-plate cusped around the edge supporting three hemispherical bosses, each with a filigree wire circle around the base, and three large filigree wire circles on their surface. Within and between each circle is a pellet surrounded by a small filigree wire circle, some of which are missing. There is a further pellet at the top of each dome between the three larger circles. Description: Silver hooked tag with circular panel decorated with a Trewhiddle-style animal. The hooked tag has a basically circular plate with rounded projections set rather low at the upper corners, each perforated with a circular sewing hole. The hook at the bottom is small and missing its tip, with a fairly worn break. It has a little flat rounded lobe to either side where the hook meets the plate. The circular panel is set inside an undecorated frame, and the decoration has been engraved. Some niello survives; where it has been lost there is a lot of soil adhering, but in a fe…

A post medieval silver gilt hooked tag. The body of the tag contains three panels, creating with the back a hollow trapezoidal section. Each of the panels is decorated with three domed circles within beaded borders in a row with pairs of smaller raised circular knops between. Each panel is separated by a linear border. On the two longer outer edges are frilled border extensions. The integral hook projects from one of the short edges and it partially covered from the front by a now broken fleur-de-lis. The hook is complete but slightly bent at the tip. The other side of the body of the…
