A Burgundian silver coin: a double patard of Charles the Bold (1467-1477). It is 26.6mm in diameter and 0.8mm thick. It weighs 2.99gm. In 1469, following an agreement made between Edward IV and Charles the Bold, these coins were made legal tender in England and remained so for over 60 years afterwards; they crop up in hoards (in steadily declining numbers) until well into Henry VIII's reign. The Burgundian rulers were seen as friends of the English and this is the main reason that this type of foreign coin was allowed to circulate here. The metal is not quite sterling value, s…

A medieval silver coin: a penny of Edward III (1327-77), Pre-treaty period, Durham mint. It is 18.2mm in diameter and 0.7mm thick. It weighs1.15gm. The quality of the obverse die used for this coin appears to be very poor: the lettering is of different sizes and staggered, the king's head is tilted to the right, and there are broken annulets above each shoulder of the bust and at the end of the legend. This perhaps indicates a coin of series F as a crude local die is known to have been used at Durham for this series of coins. For reference, see North, volume 1, number 1177.

Part of a silver coin of Early Medieval date, and Merovingian. The coin is laminating or may be a copper alloy core with a silver surface. The design of one face is illegible except for the letters: "[-]EC" in the legend. The other face has a central cross on a step and the three visible letters of the legend are: "(L) V (r)". This is probably a silver copy of a gold tremissis from Dorestad by the moneyer Madelinus. The later ones get quite blundered, which probably explains the odd legends on this example.

A clipped silver siliqua of the House of Theodosius, probably of Magnus Maximus, VIRTVS ROMANORVM, Roma seated facing. Compare RIC IX, 58/84. This type was struck for Gratian, Theodosius, Magnus Maximus and Flavius Victor. Compare PAS-EFFE41 and GLO-6F0EB3. The coin has been clipped and hardly any of the legends survive.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire

Description: Part of a Medieval probable annular brooch, of which over half of the frame survives. The pin is missing. There was probably a constriction to house the pin on the missing part of the frame. The frame looks to have been roughly oval in shape and at one side it has a projection which tapers to a point and terminates in a trefoil shaped knop. The front of the frame is inscribed with lombardic letters reading: "[...]IC'(IBI)DE'IM'E'SRE[...]". The significance of this is unclear. The brooch probably dates from the 13th to early 14th century. Consequently, in terms of age …

A silver Post Medieval coin which was clearly not intended for circulation as money, because it has two obverses, but which would presumably not have passed as a counterfeit. It is imitating a coin of Henry VII, but it does not match any known coin type. It appears that each face was struck from a different die, one from the Canterbury mint, so it is not a straightforward brockage. Paul Withers comments that it is "a good counterfeit, an accurate enough legend and the dies made with proper punches. Whoever made it had had not only skill, but had had lots of practice, and access t…
