Post Medieval silver cufflink element. A disc from one end of a cufflink. On the front is a raised design of a heart with a small flame rising from the top and two arrows in saltire behind it. The raised design is surrounded by a stippled background within a raised circular line border. Beyond this is a down turned edge forming the side ending in an out turned lip. Corresponding recessed areas on the back suggest the design was stamped. The loop on the back is oval with a flattened outer side and formed of circular sectioned drawn wire soldered onto the disc. the solder has covered the centre of the back, filling in the recessed areas, there is an air hole from a bubble to one side. There is no visible makers mark.
Dimensions: It is 16.2mm in diameter, 2.2mm thick, 5.1mm including the loop. It weighs 1.01 grams.
Many similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme Database and reported through the Treasure process, e.g. ESS-BD57D3 (2010 T752), YORYM-2C3C87 (2011 T240), SOM-5E1FC3 (2011 T609) and ESS-0934B2 (2010 T570). They are dated to the later 17th to early 18th century. As this was found in 1995 it predates the 1996 Treasure act and would not have been considered Treasure under the old Treasure Trove law.

A circular silver cufflink with downward-angling rim. The upper surface is decorated with two hearts, set side by side, a crown above. This decoration is executed in low relief, while the recessed background is stippled. A loop has been attached to the centre of the hollow underside.
The motif of two hearts under a crown was used to symbolise the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza in 1662, although the style probably remained in fashion for some years after. Such cufflinks are commonly recorded through the Treasure Act, similar examples including 2005 T168 from Kensworth, Bedfordshire (TAR 2005/6: 138, no. 612).

A complete pair of post-Medieval silver cuff links (c. 1700-c. 1800 AD).
The cuff link consists of two silver cast octagonal discs joined together by an elongated silver wire loop, circular in cross-section. The discs are slightly convex at the front and slightly concave at the rear. Each disc has a central silver wire loop, circular in cross-section, at the rear through which the elongated joining loop passes. The design at the front of each disc is similar and consists of an octagonal groove close to the outline shape. Within the groove, at the centre, is an engraved flower motif of four rounded petals with a lobe between each petal. The centre is cross-hatched. These cuff links are scratched and slightly worn at the front and have corrosion residue at the rear. There is no indication of any maker's mark.
Overall length: 28.21mm; maximum diameter of each disc: 14.80mm; overall thickness 5.03mm. Weight: 2.22g.

Treasure case: 2012 T199, disclaimed and returned to finder
Description: Post Medieval silver cufflink element, one end of a cufflink. The piece is formed of two circular pieces of silver sheet now squashed flat together but possibly originally with a convex front and back. On the front is a raised design of a heart with a small flame rising from the top and two arrows in saltire behind it. The raised design is surrounded by a stippled background within a raised circular line border, now worn. The edge appears irregular and broken all the way around and may originally have been turned down or projected further. The back sheet is plain with a soldered loop in the centre and around it cracks and a hole clearly showing the two separate sheets. The hole is circular and may be an original blow hole. The loop is formed of circular sectioned drawn wire soldered onto the disc, The middle is flattened and widened giving it a trapezoid shape in profile. There is no visible makers mark.
Dimensions: It is 12.8mm by 10.0mm, the disc is 0.6mm thick, 5.2mm including the loop. It weighs 0.49 grams.
Discussion: Many cufflinks with similar flaming heart designs can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme Database and reported through the Treasure process, e.g. ESS-BD57D3 (2010 T752), YORYM-2C3C87 (2011 T240) and ESS-0934B2 (2010 T570). However these are usually formed with one piece of sheet with the raised design on the front echoed by indents on the back. Convex cufflinks are known but usually have a very convex front with incised designs e.g. SOM-BF3954 (2011 T468). It seems likely this is just a slight more robust version of the usual flaming heart type and it is possibly other examples of this type where the design is not seen on the back are also made of two thicknesses of sheet but as they are undamaged this is not clear on photographs.
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

A post-Medieval silver cufflink.
A circular-sectioned, sub-rectangular wire link joins the two head together. These heads are of equal form, being circular, with flat upper surfaces, angled sides and a wire loop at the centre of their flat undersides. Each head measures 12.6mm in diameter. Overall, the object is 24.7mm long, 5mm thick and weighs 2.26g.
Although probably dating from the 17th or 18th century, the lack of any decoration, marks or other diagnostic features means that this piece cannot be securely dated to before or after 1712 and therefore does not qualify as treasure under the terms of the 1996 Treasure Act.

A set of Post Medieval silver cufflinks. Formed of two hexagonal disc with an incised flower design, both of which have a central wire attachment loop at the reverse. One of the elements is flat, while the other has walls 1.2mm deep. The cuff link elements are connected by a wire oval link which fits through the reverse loops.
Each element is 10mm in diameter. The wire link is 12mm long and 5mm wide.
Cuff links with this floral motif have not yet been accurately dated by specialists of the Post-Medieval period. However, they are believed to be later in date than the Charles II cufflinks which feature two hearts beneath a crown (for example: IOW-FAB4F4), and so post-date the 1996 Treasure Act.

Modern silver cuff link element or button. It is in the form of a flower formed of a central circular recess, surrounded by eight smaller ciruclar recesses of which only five survive. Each of the outer recesses are surrouned by a narrow ropework border. The recesses are likely to have contained glass, gem or paste settings. The reverse has two incomplete projections which would have formed an attachment loop.
It is 15.68mm in diameter, 2.29mm thick and weighs 0.5 grams.
The find is less than 300 years old, and as such does not need to be reported as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act (1996)

A post-medieval silver cufflink element. The design on the face consists of two hearts under a crown with a stippled background and plain broder. The disc has downward turned edges. The heart on the left of the face has a slightly irregular shaped left bust as the right heart encroaches/ overlaps the left heart. The reverse has an integral loop in the centre. And a small hole just below this loop in the lower section.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 13.81mm
Width: 4.72mm
Weight: 0.69g
Discussion:
The motif of two hearts under a crown was used to symbolise the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Briganza in 1662. The style remained in fashion through the early 18th Century. A similar example can be found in the TAR 2005/6: p 138 (ref 613), 2005 T168, from Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire (2010 T195; PAS ID: BH-1FFDA3), and from Gnosall, Staffordshire (2010 T334: PAS ID: WMID-52DAF4). This type is commonly recorded throughout the Treasure Act.
In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
