2012 T21A medieval mount with a central shaft that flares at one end and terminates in a downturned hook. At the narrow end two arms branch out ending in a foliate terminal. Each of these is pierced with a hole, as is the flared end. Beneath the hook is an incised design, semicircular in shape, containing elliptical motifs. The design is much abraded. The function of the mount is unclear but may be connected with the accessories that were used to adorn horses. The mount is silver and dates from the fourteenth century. Dimensions: length 27 mm, width 19 mm. J P Robinson Curat…

Description: Early Anglo-Saxon incomplete cast gilded silver mount, possibly part of a sword pommel. Triangular in cross-section, hollow on the underside, with one closed end surviving, but broken before the other end; the break is neither particularly fresh nor particularly worn. The object is shaped like a prism, with the apex straight across the top of the object; while the lower edge, if originally symmetrical, is bi-concave (one curve survives and the lower edge slopes up to probably begin another). The closed end is straight and, apart from gilding, is flat and undecorated. …

An incomplete silver mount in the shape of two hearts arranged as a mirror image, with the bottom point facing outwards. One pint is missing while the other is worn. The hearts are defined using etched zig-zag lines, a practise commonly referred to as wriggle-work and used frequently on pewter during the 17th Century. Both rivets remain in place, although one is broken, while the other is bent. Both are square in section. Mounts of this style are probably casket mounts, rather than designed for personal adornment, and date from the Late 16th to 17th centuries AD. The mount is 21mm …

Silver mount. Cast plate in the form of a cross potent, now roughly folded and flattened. The motif might be apt to the decoration of the cover of a missal, breviary or reliquary. A symbol resembling two conjoined lozenges is stamped into the bar at the end of one of the arms. When combined with smaller similar crosses in its angles, this symbol would become the Cross of Jerusalem, the badge of that Crusader kingdom - the military Orders held extensive lands in eastern England, though their local importance was primarily economic. This object is to be considered as Treasure on account…

TREASURE CASE 2012 T251: A silver-gilt sheet plaque/ mount (?). The etched scene is one of a female, facing forward, holding a hand and flower in her left hand. This appears to be part of a larger scene; the foot, leg, right hand and top of a feather, belonging to a male (?) is visible. The style of the clothing suggests this is a dating of around the 15th-16th century. Around this scene are the remains of a border. The mount is badly damaged around the edges, bent in the middle across the width and cracked along a this bend. Above the females head, through a feather which comes out f…

It has a central hole for a separate circular rivet which is missing. It is flattened in half, most likely due to post-depositional damage. It measures 19.00mm in diameter, 11.06mm in height, 0.39mm in thickness and weighs 0.83g. This mount is similar to copper-alloy examples published from London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: no 952).
