A lead alloy seal, probably a cloth seal, probably dating from 1821. It consists of two circular discs of lead connected by a narrow strip that is folded so that the discs are pressed together. One disc has a hole in the centre through which is passed an integral rivet from the other disc. This is then squashed flat when the seal is stamped. On one disc are letters in three lines reading (?)/NE(L)/EL (the first letter being either an I or a T). On the other side is a quartered crowned shield, the quarters blank, flanked by the numbers 2 / 1 and surrounded by lettering which reads AME(…

Lead alloy, with silvered and gilt surface, medallion. Cast medallion, both sides identical, with a silver coating with gilding over it. A central motif of a head in profile right. The profile has a vaguely anatomical aspect, as if elements of the skull or musculature were emphasised; it is hairless and at all events does not appear to be a naturalistic portrait. A circumferential Latin legend reads: GERMANICUS NAVIGAT SOLO NULL, possibly translating as: A German never sails alone,or, in the light of comments rehearsed below, possibly 'No German sails alone'.. Paul Cannon kindly comme…

Lead and iron fishing lure. Plano-convex casting representing a beetle with eyes, wing case and abdomen modelled, and with the bent stub of an iron hook or pin embedded in its flat underside on the centre line, a little towards the tail. The form of the object enabled it to spin as it was drawn through water, and the low relief detail on the convex face was intended to set up vibrations to entice fish such as salmon or pike - its 'realistic' appearance would be of more significance to the fisherman than to his prey. If successful, the object would function as a gorge, to stick crosswa…

Parts of an unidentified object or objects of Post Medieval to modern date. The fragments are made of layers of lead sheet and pieces of leather, held together by copper alloy rivet and roves. There are two large pieces and eight less complete pieces. The two larger pieces are made of three sheets of lead stacked up, with several layers of leather on the top and bottom. The rivets fixing them together go through all the layers. One end of the pieces is rounded and the other is straight, but it is not clear which are breaks and which (if any) are complete edges. Lead Alloy 'Bill and Charlie' Replica of a Pilgrim Badge. Cast relief image of a bearded mask. The face has exaggerated brows and round staring eyes, a straight-sided nose modelled in particularly high relief, a beard shown as straight strokes, and drapery rendered as crude cross-hatching. A hole of diameter 2mm has been drilled at the high hairline. The back is entirely flat, and the object retains its leaden grey colour overall.
