Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy pin of probable Roman date. It has a small flattened globular head and there is no collar nor grooves. The shaft is thick, and expands slightly in diameter as it extends further from the head (3.18mm under the head, 3.5mm at the widest point). It tapers again slightly at the far end, but it is not clear whether it is intentionally hipped. The far end is patinated, but may be a break. The pin has a smooth well developed grey green patina. Compare NARC-CBCBE1.

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper alloy thimble of later Medieval to Post-Medieval date (about 1400-1650). The thimble has a shallow domed top and angled sides. The exterior is decorated with a continuous spiral of D shaped pits or depressions covering the sides and top; there is no tonsure. The bottom end of the spiral is corroded so it is not clear if there was a maker's mark here. The thimble has a dark green-brown patina. Examples of the spiral design from this period may be seen at PAS record IDs: DENO-AA9B85, SOM-6B8B37 and IOW-EB5878.

An incomplete cast copper alloy composite Medieval buckle frame with forked spacer dating from about 1350-1500 AD. The frame is D-shaped with a pointed outer edge. In section the frame is sub triangular. The pin is missing as well as the plates. The back of the frame has a slightly raised moulded border, which would have originally separated it from the now missing plates that fit on either face of the spacer. Corrosion suggests that the pin may have been iron. The buckle is smooth and has a medium-dark green patina. Examples may also be seen in Meols, page 95, plate 15. Please a…

A corroded Post Medieval copper alloy mount in the shape of a heart. The reverse side is flat and there are two spikes which are both bent in a hoop towards the centre. The copper alloy has a patchy green patina through which red metal shows. According to Egan; Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition (2005); p40; No 136; the provision of double pointed prongs has been claimed as a characteristic of horse harness mounts. SUSS-5A7F53 is a similar but longer mount. It cites a heart shaped two-pronged mount in Read; Metal Artefacts of Antiquity (2001) p37; No. 323 which i…

The reverse of the arms have a cast integral cylinder taking the axel and hinged-pin. Atop the head is a short, central 'fin' placed above a concave depression for the missing headstud. The bowtapers from the top to the foot, marked by a small disc. The catchpalte emerged from the base of the bow and retains the hooked pin rest.

An incomplete fragment of a cast copper alloy socketed axehead of Bronze Age date 1000-800 BC. The fragment consists of a part of the rim of the socket. There is a raised casting seam running laterally and centrally to the fragment. The collar consists of a single stepped raised edge at the socketed end. The remaining profile suggests it is from a sub-rectangular socket and is therefore a curvilinear profile. The surface is pitted and some of the original patina remains on the collar and there are patches of light green. There is not enough detail to precisely date this fragment howeve…
