Roman cast copper-alloy developed T-shaped brooch with hinged pin dating to c. AD 75-150. The pin is mostly missing. The brooch head has open-ended cylindrical wings, these hold the axis bar for the hinged pin. A white paste/cement is visible at the ends. There is a large transverse slot through the centre of the underside of the head, between the wings, where the remnants of the pin survive. The triangular copper alloy pin head is still in situ but the pin has broken off just behind the head. At the top of the head is a small rectangular tab with a broken, worn upper edge, possibly t…

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A bent 16-/17th-century copper-alloy post-medieval jetton of Hans Krauwinckel II (fl. 1586-1635), of the 'Rose / orb' type, 'GOT VERTRAW VND AVH IN BAVW' legend, struck at Nuremberg. The jetton has been bent over on itself, almost in half. This is a very unusual legend for Hans Krauwinckel II and is not published in the main reference work. An example has, however, been recorded on this database (ref. WMID363) and, as is noted in that record, Wolf Lauffer II (fl. 1612-1651 AD) used a similar legend (Mitchiner 1706).

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded cast copper-alloy medieval strap-end made of a single strip folded in half widthways. In shape it is a simple rectangular with rounded corners, some of the rounding may be from wear. There is a single rivet which appears to be cast integrally with the front and then roughly hammered flat after going through the strap and a hole in the back-plate. The flattened end of the rivet is sub square. The strip is notably thick (Th.: c. 1.9mm); this has helped result in a fracture to one side of the fold that extends up one face. The strap-end seems to have been squeezed together j…
