Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast lead weight of uncertain date. The object is sub-pyramidal in that it has a truncated, flat top. This gives it a trapezoidal cross-section. On the upper surface the square top has a raised X with a pellet in each. Between the square top and the base are four trapezoidal sides, two of which has a raised cross. A similar weight can be found in Biggs and Withers (2000, 29; ref. 62).

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An almost compete corroded lead-alloy trefoil mount or stud of medieval date. It is decorated on one face with three empty shapes which point internally on one side and are rounded to the edge of the mount on the other. Between and around them is a border filled with moulded zig-zags, beyond which a ridge towards the edge. The lower surface shows only the stump of the attachment fitting at the centre of a low ridge. At the outer point of each lobe there has been some loss; one of the lobes has also been folded. A direct parallel for this mount has been recorded on this database, ref. …

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal of late 17th-century date. What survives is probably an inner and outer disc from a four-disc alnage/subsidy seal, broken at the junction with a second inner disc. On this, 'disc 2' is a fleur-de-lis moulded in relief. The outer surface of 'disc 1' is flat and has been scored with a longitudinal line with a capital letter 'H' to each side. The inner surfaces of the discs have a ridged border. From the centre of disc 1 a long integral rivet emerges, bent slightly at the tip (c. 10mm long). The discs have been bent more or less at right …

Object type: POWDER MEASURE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A squashed cast lead-alloy powder holder cap of 17th-century date. The base was once oval in plan (now up to c. 18mm long), and includes the (now distorted) cap loops which would have been attached to the bandolier (a belt with small loops worn across the chest by soldiers) (Courtney 1988, 2). There is a moulded rim at the other end; a casting seam is also visible. The open end and sides have been squashed together from the two main sides. The artefact has corroded to an off-white colour, with some underlying grey visible; there are some superficial marks and blemishes.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded and bent cast lead-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle, complete with iron pin. The buckle is elaborately moulded, with broadly D-shaped loops. Each outer edge features a moulded rosette from which protrudes a rounded knop. There is a further rosette at each end of the pin bar, beyond which a similar, slightly shorter knop. At the 'corners' of each loop is a curved knop. Either side of the ends of the pin bar is a group of three small longitudinal ridges with transverse ridges beyond. There are further transverse ridges between the curved knops and the outer edge roset…

A disc from a fragmentary post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal of probable 17th-century date. The disc is probably from a post-Restoration four-disc alnage/subsidy seal, probably either Discs 2 or 3, with a protruding rectangular strip broken at its end. It is circular and bears a stamped crowned harp device, with a letter 'R' visible, within a beaded border. The connecting strip is at around 5 o'clock to the design. The object has been bent following numerous old strikes, one of which resulted in a fracture.

A corroded and slightly bent post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal (c. 17th-century). It is a two-part, probable alnage seal. Towards the centre are the stamped incuse numerals '71', misaligned, with a letter 'N' in low relief to their left. The integral rivet of disc 1 has been pushed through the central aperture of disc 2 and squashed into a large sub-oval form. The surface of disc 2 around it is seemingly plain. Disc 2 h…

A corroded fragment of a post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal (16th century AD). The fragment is part of the rim of a seal with little of the inner design discernible due to old damage. On the upper surface the extant inscription reads 'DINI . P', perhaps part of the inscription 'LONDINI PRO PANNIS LANICIS' ('for woollen cloths in London'). Comparable examples can be found on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, including refs. DENO-044C25 and BUC-2E7B47. By reference to these and examples published in Egan (1994, 40-41; ref. 61) and Saunders (ed. 2001, 79; ref. 12ff.) this cloth …

A very worn and corroded post-medieval lead-alloy cloth seal. The two discs of this seal are joined by a thin connecting strip which is bent over so that the two discs are touching. Both outer surfaces have designs in low relief which are indistinct due to wear and corrosion. One appears to feature letters in cartouche. The cloth seal now has an off-white patina.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded, damaged and incomplete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The remaining part is the rounded flask, with its sub-circular lower chamber. On one side there is a crown in low relief and on the other there is the letter 'W' surmounted by a crown, the latter all on a cross-hatched field within a line border. This example has been broken below possible handle lugs, with a fairly neat transverse tear. The interior of the chamber has been squashed together, and the object bent in profile, especially at the break. It has corroded to a largely off-white colour. An example o…

A slightly worn and corroded late 16th-century lead-alloy post-medieval token depicting a double-headed eagle/crowned rose (North 2062; Mitchiner 4738ff.; Powell type 25). The circumference has suffered slight crimping in places.
North (2006, 140) notes that such pieces were probably medalets rather than tokens as some appear to relate to Mary, Queen of Scots. These rare pieces are normally found in London, and were thought to be struck about 1574 (ibid., 140); Mitchiner (1988, 1653) has since revised the dates of the 'GOD SAVE' reverse to c. 1590 - c. 1603 AD. Further examples can …
