Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete shield-shaped cast copper-alloy medieval heraldic harness pendant. The object is of the 'heater' shield shape, that is, with a flat top, and sides which curve steeply to a point. From the top edge a suspension loop protrudes centrally at ninety degrees to the pendant; it is angled forwards and slightly off centre. The pendant's upper surface features moulded heraldic decoration in the form of a lion rampant. The field is inlaid with red enamel and, although no trace survives of gilding, the red-brown metal is indicative of heating for gilding. It can only therefore be descr…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged late early-medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal (11th century AD). The hollow back would have enclosed one of the arms of the lower part of the stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). The recess is central with a lower supporting ledge. Within the recess are corroded traces of the iron stirrup and possible lead solder to either side. The terminal is trilobate, of a flared foot like form. The flat lower surface is broadly semicircular in cross-section. At the top of the foot is a moulded transverse band. The narrowed element above has been broken as a result of old damage. In form…

A simple single-looped buckle frame cast in copper-alloy of possible medieval date. It is rectangular in plan with a rectangular aperture and sides that are slightly bevelled both internally and externally. On the inner edge, just off centre, are corroded traces of an iron pin. The artefact has corroded to a red-brown colour with traces of light-green corrosion product. Rectangular buckles with simple frames have been published as 14th century in Griffiths et al. A very worn and corroded, irregular mid 16th-century silvered copper-alloy post-medieval groat of either Henry VIII, or Edward VI, posthumous coinage in the name of Henry VIII, possibly 'London (Southwark)' mint (c. 1544 - c. 1551 AD; cf. North 1845/1872). The coin has the appearance of clipping and has an abraded circumference with some slight bending. The coin has been pierced, presumably to convert it into a jewellery item, through the inner circle at 8 o'clock on the obverse, emerging at 3 o'clock on the reverse; the hole has abraded through.
