A post-medieval 'crotal' (animal) bell cast in copper alloy, broken into two unequal parts (17th century). The upper half has two sound holes c. 2mm in diameter, both not fully filed. As a result of old damage the bell has broken through one of those holes in a ragged break extending to each side to the two sound holes on the lower hemisphere. These latter abut the central casting seam and are far larger (c. 7-8mm). They are joined together by a slot and are perpendicular to those on the upper half. On both sides of the slot is a moulded cherub with a face flanked by wings that also…

A fragment from a post-medieval animal bell ('crotal') cast in copper alloy. It comes from the lower half of the bell, an area extending from one side of the sound slot, seen as a broadly straight edge. It is decorated with overlapping moulded semicircles forming a pattern known as 'fish scale'. The semicircles on the fish scale pattern decrease in size as they travel from the median seam end to the slot. The 'fish scale' decoration dates this crotal to the 16th or 17th centuries (Bailey 1995, 40-41; ref. 7), see also ref. HAMP-123118 on this database. It is now a light-grey colour …

An extremely worn, clipped and bent, now incomplete 16th-century silver post-medieval sixpence of Elizabeth I, London mint, dating to 1584 AD (North 2015). The wear is far greater on the obverse than the reverse. The coin appears to have been deliberately bent, perhaps after the manner of a 'love token' in an S shape. The coin may have broken at one of these folds resulting in a loss of around a fifth of the original flan.

A cast copper-alloy fragment possibly from a post-medieval cooking vessel. The weighty object is trapezoidal in cross-section. It narrows from a thickness of 18.75mm at one end through a curve to 9.3mm at the other, which is broken as a result of old damage. The thicker end seems complete and angled other than a central protrusion, broadly circular in cross-section and seemingly truncated. On the lower surface of the thinner end is a low ridge, just off centre with possible traces of solder around it. The object has a variable mid-/light-green patina with some patches of off-white cor…
