Pottery body sherd with an oblique line of single twisted cord-impressed decoration running across the left side of the exterior of the sherd. The sherd is made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars, dark augite and mica, and is orangey-brown on the exterior and on the interior of the sherd, and throughout the core. This gabbroic fabric and type of decoration are seen on comparable local Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming). Anna Brindley in Cleal and …

Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Igneous rock cobble, probably greenstone but awaiting geological comment by Roger Taylor. The cobble is circular in plan and ovate in profile and section, with flakes having been removed over one side of the upper surface and a flattened base, suggesting hammerstone and pestle use. Such pieces do turn up on domestic sites but not in any quantity compared to mullers and rubbers. On these objects the waterworn cobble surfaces are all fresh and unweathered, appropriate for selection from a beach during the Neolithic. The beach selection would ensure hard enduring pieces. It is quite poss…

Veined igneous rock cobble, probably greenstone but awaiting geological comment by Roger Taylor. The cobble is triangular in plan and plano-convex in profile and section, with a vein running obliquely through the stone, which looks like a fracture. There is some pecking on the upper surface and grinding on the flattened sides and base, suggesting hammerstone and pestle use. Such pieces do turn up on domestic sites but not in any quantity compared to mullers and rubbers. The ventral face has some semi-abrupt retouch on the proximal left margin, while on the dorsal face the same margin has more abrupt angle retouch. The left dorsal margin has abrupt retouch and is clearly the main scraper edge. The distal tip ha sabrupt retouch. The proximal tip remains flat and unretouched. The piece is made from orange chert. It is possibly derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm with only tertiary cortex. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar piece on Page 166 Fig 70 No 3 which he dates to the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age era a…

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a notched blade. The dorsal face has two long fake removals from proximal to distal ends. There is a shallow notch on the the right margin, worked from the dorsal face. The ventral left margin ha sa shallow notch in a nearly central position. Ther eis a trace of edge wear on the right edge. The flint is mottled creamy grey in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear with only tertiary cortex. Mercer illustrates a similar piece on P127 Fig 55 No L90 which he dates to the Neolithic.

A side variant scraper, light grey and cream in colour, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently manufactured. The left margin exhibits discontinuous retouch with a semi-abrupt angle and is of edge extent. The retouch morphology of this margin is of sub-parallel type. Extensive cortex cover allows for comfortable handling although there is a small amount of spalling at the distal area. Extensive spalling is in evidence on the ventral face with the entire face exhibiting hairline fractures. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on p132, fig5.118, F19 which dates …

Flint blade which has been snapped at distal end - would have been longer originally. The other three sides/edges show signs of serration. It could be described as a serrated piece. There are incipient notches at lower right hand edge and at the centre of the right hand edge. There are signs of gloss on the ventral side with striations at the point on the edge where there are the notches. It is possible these could be natural, i.e. fractures in the flint but as they are too regular it is more likely to be from use wear. The flint is a medium grey colour with some inclusions and was …

A chunky looking blade with a finely serrated edge. It could be described as a piercer or serrated piece. The point has been blunted, probably from use. The serration is along the right and left hand edges and there are signs of gloss from use wear on the dorsal face. The right hand edge has patination along it. The flint is dark grey in colour with large speckles of lighter grey and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Butler [2005] illustrates a similar example on page 169, fig. 71, No. 6 which is dated to the later Neolithic.

There is a point on the same side as the notch but it is not robust enough to act as a piercer or awl. There is evidence of trimming along the right hand edge. The best description would be a notched flake. The flint is a medium grey colour with some speckles of lighter grey and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. A blade which has been truncated at distal end so could have been longer originally. It has also been snapped at the edge at the proximal end. It is possible that this could have been a notch before a piece was snapped off. This edge has been worked from the ventral side.
