Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a piercer. All the margins on the have been retouched, the dorsal left one from the ventral face, the right one from the dorsal face. The distal tip (point) is broken. The distal retouch has benn worked from the ventral face. The flint is brown in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear with only tertiary cortex. MERCER (1981) illustrates a similar piece on Page 135 Fig 59 No L151 and Page 137 Fig 60 No L165, which he calls piercers and dates to the Neolithic period. Similar pieces can be found in B…

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a piercer. The proximal left and right margins have been retouched from the ventral face to form a piercer. The point is perhaps damaged or worn. The ventral right distal margin shows possible use wear. The flint is grey in colour with red cortex. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear even with primary cortex cortex. MERCER (1981) illustrates a similar piece on Page 135 Fig 59 No L151 and L156 and Page 137 Fig 60 No L159 and L172, which he calls piercers and dates to the Neolithic period. Similar pieces…

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a piercer worked up on the edge of a D-shaped slice from a pebble. The proximal and distal ends are not clean. Most of the dorsal face is cortexed. There is retouch along all but the straight breakage. Ther eis a small sharp, fresh point near the centre of the curved right margin. Most of the retouch to form the point has been done from the ventral face, which shows some scars. . The flint is mottled grey and brown in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble by the look of its primary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrate…

An awl, dark grey in colour with light grey inclusions which has been unifacially retouched and expediently made. The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits continuous retouch of semi-abrupt angle and is of edge type extent forming a point at the proximal end. Similar retouch on the ventral face improves awl functionality. The point looks to have been snapped. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p137, fig 60, L159 which dates to the Early Neolithic

An awl, light grey with cream inclusions, unifacially retouched and expediently made. The dorsal face possesses discontinuous retouch of low angle and edge extent to the proximal end forming a serrated or cutting edge. Thinning of the face in the central and distal areas allow for more comfortable handling. Snapping has occurred at the left margin and proximal end intersect. Piercing function appears to have resulted from retouch to the right margin and proximal intersect which forms a potential piercing point. Mercer illustrates an example on p135, fig59, L145.

The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits partial retouch of semi-abrupt angle and is of edge extent. Snapping has occurred at the proximal end. Flint awl, elongated ovoid in plan and plano convex in profile. On the dorsal side the distal tip is retouched and the proximal end cortex. The left margin is fine serration and the right margin is a combination of cortex and retouched edge. On the ventral side the right margin has low angle retouch. The distal end is retouched and there is retouch scarring on the left margin. The flint is dark grey brown and the secondary cortex is grey and fawn in colouring. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on page 135, Fig. 59, No. L. 155 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Flint awl, ovoid in plan and pointed lozenge in profile. On the dorsal end the distal edge is retouched into an awl point. The proximal end is a sharp serrated edge. The left margin is serrated and the right snapped with adjacent flake removal. On the ventral side the distal end is hinge fractured and the proximal end has flake removal. The flint is mottled mid grey and putty in colour with some inclusions and a tertiary cortex. Probably an exhausted core which now looks like a heavy, chunky flake. Modified after use as a core to make an awl or piercer by retouching the right hand side towards a natural point. There is a notch on the left hand upper margin which has been worked, but the indentation on the right hand side is probably a natural formation and used to make the flake into an awl. The flake has a flat base. The flint is a dense light/medium grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Butler [2005] illustrates a similar example on page 186, fig 76, No.2 which is dated to the la…

Triangular, pyramid shaped chunk of flint with two edges trimmed with serration towards the point to form an awl. A strongly defined medial ridge with the possible thinning of the face either side to provide backing for use as an awl or using the trimmed edge. Signs of use wear on each side of medial ridge with scratches in the gloss. The base is concave and the point appears to be natural, used as a piercer/awl/borer. The ventral side is flat. The flint is a dense medium grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Bond illustrates a similar example on page 57, f…

Flint awl, sub triangular in plan and almond shaped in profile. The dorsal side is convex with a high single mesial ridge. The distal tip is abraded and the proximal end snapped. The ventral surface is an uneven convex and part hinge fractured - there is also invasive flake removal. The flint is dark grey toned with a tertiary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on page 135, Fig. 59, No. L. 156 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

The ventral face has a bulb and flake removals above it. The dorsal face has two flake removals to flatten it, a long, almost abrupt flake removal to the left and an abrupt removal to the right, which sweeps upwards towards the point. The point ha sbeen retouched on the right margin and is broken at the tip. The left dorsal margin has abrupt retouch from the dorsal face and at the distal third, semi-abrupt retouch from the ventral face. The piece is abraded, but could have been an effective saw, with a denticulated edge. It is made from a grey flint. It was probably derived fro…

This piece is shaped like a high, three faced pyramid. Each face has been cleared of cortex and the base is a flat, cortex free platform. Presumably this was the stricking the platform and is the proximal end. The (distal) tip area has retouch on one face and possibly on the opposite face, but this area is heavily abraded. It is made from a dark grey flint with light grey moments. It was probably derived from a local beach pebble but gives no clues from the tertiary cortex. Butler (2005) ha sa similar piece illustrated on Page 129 Fig 54 No 2, which he calls an awl and dates t…

Flake which has been worked along two edges towards point to make an awl or piercer. There is a medial ridge with natural abrasion on the sides of the ridge. There is a concave depression alongside this ridge, perhaps natural or from deliberate thinning with taking off a flake, but it provides backing for using the flake as an awl/piercer. The flint is a dense medium to dark grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Bond [2004] illustrates a similar example on page 57, fig 5.27 No.L31 which is dated to the neolithic.

Flake with edge trimmed towards the point which is a natural feature. Some cortex remains on the dorsal side which acts as backing. The ventral side has a flat back. The ventral face has been damaged, but there is abraded retouch at thwe right margin and the distal end. Th dorsal face has a medial ridge towards the point where the left margin and distal margin meet, but there appears to be no retouch from this face except at the point itself, which has been worked from all directions. The right margin has secondary retained cortex. The piece is made from a black flint with light grey cortex. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble, by the look of its secondary cortex.
