This is a flake from a core of Portland chert. The ventral face has an hinge fracture and a bulbal scar. The dorsal face has retouch on the proximal half of the left margin above the hinge fracture to make a sharp edge. The rest of the margin all round is thicker and has abraded retouch which may have been to prepare it as a scraper. The piece is made from black Portland chert. It is possibly derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm with only tertiary cortex. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar piece on Page 128 Fig 53 No 3 which he dates to the Neolit…

The ventral side is flat with retouch scarring and some large flake removal on the proximal end with conchoidal ripples emanating up to the distal end. The flint has brown and grey tones. Mercer (1981)illustrates a similar example on page 135, Fig. 59, No. L. 141 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Flint end and side scraper, sub-ovoid in plan, plano-convex in section. On the dorsal face there is semi-abrupt retouch on the lower (i.e. towards the proximal end) edge of the right margin. There is retouch, or use wear, at the proximal end. There is retouch on the lower left margin. A tiny spur exists at the proximal end. It is unusual to see a piece worked at the proximal end. The flint is grey with primary cortex; it is likely to have derived from a local beach pebble. Bond (2004) shows a similar example on page 56, Figure 5.22, Number iv.
