Object type: AMPULLA
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead pilgrim ampulla or holy water flask with the neck bent forwards and almost folded closed to seal it. The ampulla is bag shaped with protrusions or lugs on either side of the neck which are the remains of the suspension loops, used to suspend the flask from a cord around the pilgrim's neck. It is decorated on one side with moulded ridges radiating from the centre to imitate a scallop shell. Beneath the shell there is a rectangular stand or box with an incised lattice pattern. The back of the ampulla has a circular stamp, following the curvature of the body, with a crescent wi…

Cast lead pilgrim ampulla or holy water flask, almost rectangular in shape, with a short neck flattened closed to seal it. The ampulla is slightly waisted with angular loops, on either side at this point, to suspend the flask from a cord around the pilgrim's neck. It is decorated on one face with fleur de lis and lattice within a shield, surmounted by a two concentric circles with radiating lines between them. On the opposite face there are four fleurs de lis beneath an arch of lattice work which has triangles and crescents above it, perhaps part of a crown. These ampullae were bought…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A leaf arrowhead of translucent dark grey brown flint with a tiny patch of nodular cortex near to one margin. One side is totally invasively retouched, but the other is only worked from the margins, leaving much of the ventral surface of the preform flake. The plan is assymetric and unexpected given the competence of the pressure flaking. It appears that the leaf has been retouched after damage.Opposite the curved edge there is a long straight edge which has truncated the ventral scars. Also, what was the pointed tip has been semi-abruptly trimmed and a notch put into one of the conve…

This piece was originally a kite shaped leaf arrowhead with bi-facial invasive retouch. The right margin at the wider hafted end ha sbeen snapped and blunted by abrupt retouch. The pointe dend has two notches, opposite each other about 4mm below the tip. It is possible that this was a special arrowhead redesigned to hang as a pendant or talisman. The piece is made from dark brown flint, the colour of congealed blood.. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble, but this is impossible to confirm with no cortex. Mercer illustrates a similar piece on Page 123 Fig 53 No L42, wh…

An exquisite barbed and tanged arrowhead, complete except for the missing extreme tip. It has been pressure flaked over its surface; mostly transversely except for a little of the original blank remaining on both sides of the tang. The flint used is of translucent brown with cream flecks. Pebbles are available locally from the beach but it is hard to imagine that an imported nodule of Devon flint was not used, given the large and often wasteful use of it in this find-spot. Bond(2004), page 125, fig 5.111 gives this arrowhead a 'Conygar d' classification.

Flint arrowhead or projectile formed on a flake that is sub-rectangular in plan but with an upper half that is more bulbous, culminating in a point; reversed 'S' shape in profile; and bi-convex in section. It is tapered as if for hafting and is truncated at the proximal end. There is retouch on both lateral margins. It is considered to be an arrowhead or projectile head but is too crude and heavy to be assigned to the Beaker period. Bond (2004) shows a similar example on page 146, Figure 5.132, Number 32.

Broken leaf-shaped arrowhead, fan shaped or sub-rectangular in plan with bi-facial invasive retouch to thin it. The margins which lean upwards from the proximal end have been snapped flat. The curved distal margin has low angle and semi-abrupt retouch on both faces to sharpen it. The piece is made from a light grey flint. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm from its tertiary cortex. Keene illustrates a similar piece on Page 40 and Page 42, Plate XXX. It is probably from the early Neolithic period.

Broken flint arrowhead, oblique type. On the dorsal face the left barb is remaining but the right is missing and the tang is broken. Invasive retouch has been applied. The flint is grey with pale mottles and patches. there is no cortex, so it is classed as tertiary. Keene (1999) shows a similar broken oblique arrowhead on page 100, Figure 3, Number 50.

An oblique arrowhead of translucent brown flint. It was finely made with a nearly symmetrical profile and pointed tip and barb with sharp, even edges. The straight lateral margin was bifacially invasively worked. The opposite side is convex in plan and worked invasively from one side and meets the other margin at a distal point. The lower end forms a pointed barb where the oblique, bifacially, invasively worked base margin imperceptably curves to meet it. Much of the preform flake surface is remaining with a broad transverse removal of a single flake scarred surface. Bond(2004) illustr…

Serrated left and right edges on dorsal face, with broken tip and possible broken tang and barb. The flint is dark brown colour with lighter flecks. Unfinished and reworked flint leaf-shaped arrowhead with pronounced tang and, on the upper right margin, a notch (thought to show a later use). The tang has been created by notches on either side created by semi-abrupt retouch on the dorsal face. The notch on the upper right margin has been created by similar retouch but on the ventral side. It appears to be an unfinished leaf-shaped arrowhead with a notch that may have been put to use at a later time. The flint is pale brown and is tertiary because of the absence of cortex. Keene (1999) shows a very similar example on page 60, Figu…

Flint leaf-shaped arrowhead, almost ovoid in plan and plano convex in profile. The flint appears to be a bifacially worked fragment of an arrowhead possibly re-used as a notched flake. The dorsal side has a vertical clean snap from the distal tip to the proximal end. There has also been some unifacial low-angle retouch. On the ventral side the left margin has a notch and unifacial low-angle retouch. The flint is translucent and smokey grey in colour. There is also some gloss on the central area of the dorsal side. The distal tip (point) is broken. The distal retouch has benn worked from the ventral face. The flint is brown in colour. Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a piercer worked up on the edge of a D-shaped slice from a pebble. The proximal and distal ends are not clean. Most of the dorsal face is cortexed. There is retouch along all but the straight breakage. Ther eis a small sharp, fresh point near the centre of the curved right margin. Most of the retouch to form the point has been done from the ventral face, which shows some scars. . The flint is mottled grey and brown in colour. An awl, dark grey in colour, which has been bifacially retouched and expediently made. A notch has been created on the left margin close to the proximal end of the dorsal face with the proximal end itself having been retouched close to the intersect with the left margin to enhance awl functionality. This retouch has been carried out in a similar fashion on the ventral face to further improve function. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on p143, fig5.129, F153 which dates to the Late Neolithic.

An awl, dark grey in colour with light grey inclusions which has been unifacially retouched and expediently made. The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits continuous retouch of semi-abrupt angle and is of edge type extent forming a point at the proximal end. Similar retouch on the ventral face improves awl functionality. The point looks to have been snapped. An awl, light grey with cream inclusions, unifacially retouched and expediently made. The dorsal face possesses discontinuous retouch of low angle and edge extent to the proximal end forming a serrated or cutting edge. Thinning of the face in the central and distal areas allow for more comfortable handling. Snapping has occurred at the left margin and proximal end intersect. Piercing function appears to have resulted from retouch to the right margin and proximal intersect which forms a potential piercing point. Mercer illustrates an example on p135, fig59, L145.
