Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An extended end variant scraper, light to medium grey in colour, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently manufactured. The distal end exhibits continuous retouch with a semi-abrupt angle and is of long extent. The retouch morphology of this margin is of sub-parallel type. This retouch continues along the entirety of the left margin. There is extensive cortex cover of the dorsal face which aids in comfort when handling. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p135, fig59, L140 which dates to the Neolithic.

An end scraper, medium grey in colour with cream inclusions, which has been expediently made and unifacially retouched. The distal end exhibits an undercutting continuous retouch with a semi-abrupt angle and is of edge type in extent. The retouch morphology of this margin is of sub-parallel type. There is also discontinuous, edge retouch to the left margin which is of low angle, thus giving a serrated cutting edge. Extensive cortex covering of the right margin aids in comfort when handling. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on p132, fig5.118, F5 which dates to the Earl…

A pyramidal flake removed from a multi-platform core or from thinning a biface. It contains a coarser inclusion in the flint. The colour is opaque cream and this may be patination or the original colour but there is a suspicious pinkish hue and some dark red 'splotches'. Furthermore where the edge of the tool has been slightly abraded, the small flake scar has a distinctive lustrous smooth surface. This with the lack of spalling or crazing of the structure suggests deliberate, slow and controlled heat treatment of the flint. There are dozens of examples of this in the Clodgy Moor area.…

Flint scraper, round in plan and almond shaped in profile. The dorsal side has a convex surface with a concave fracture on the left margin. The distal end and right margin have either a spalled or retouched edge which is quite sharp. The ventral side has a slightly convex surface with mesial flake removal. The flint is pale grey brown with cream inclusions in colouring. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on page 135, Fig. 59, No. L. 141 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Flint scraper, leaf shaped in plan and almond shaped in profile. The dorsal side surface has mesial ridging with cortex on the left side and flake removal on the right. The right margin is serrated. The ventral side has a convex surface with a small chip on the distal tip. The flint is possibly from Beer Head and is dark brown in tone with a high lustre. The secondary cortex is dark beige in colour. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 154, Fig. 5.138, No. 1 which is dated to the Bronze Age period.

Flint pebble scraper, elongated ovoid in plan and almond shaped in profile. On the dorsal side the distal edge is retouched and the surface has had large flake removal. The proximal end is abraded. The left margin is fractured and snapped. The ventral side appears to be the smooth side of a pebble. The flint is putty coloured with a tertiary cortex. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 126, Fig. 50, No. 6 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

This piece is made on a concave flake. The concave ventral face has a bulb and slight retouch at the proximal left margin. The dorsal face is rough and pitted. This pasty shaped piece has a flattened left margin with a long flake removal or it has been snapped. The distal end and right margin has abrupt retouch to create a scraper. It is made from a clerical grey flint with light grey mottling. It was probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm from its tertiary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar tool on Page 133 Fig 58 No L124, which he…

The ventral face is concave, but has no retouch. The proximal end has a bulb. The distal end has retained secondary cortex. The dorsal face of this crescent shaped piece has abrupt retouch along its left margin. The right margin is flattened from the the proximal end to the mid point with a flake removal by a hinge fracture. The margin above it has been sharpened by semi-abrupt retouch. Like many of the flints we have encountered from this area, this piece seems to have a dual function. It is made from a cream coloured flint. It was probably derived from a local beach pebble b…
