Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A thin hard hammer struck flake of dark grey and brown flint with cream flakes. The left margin is pebble cortex. The platform edge remains on the dorsal proximal end and is abraded with fine bladelets removed. The right margin is sharp and of dihedral plan. The upper section has slight retouch, seen from the ventral side and the lower margin is shallowly and more abruptly flaked. Mercer(1981) illustrates a utilised flake on page 129,fig 56, L95.

A thick flake of dark grey flint with a pink tinge. The ventral surface has a spall missing so the flake has been damaged by heat. The dorsal surface has parallel feathered flake scars, cutting through the nodular cortex but leaving it on either side. On the distal end is a sharp edged facet which has been utilised with fine flaking resulting from its use. Mercer(1981) illustrates a utilised flake on page 131,fig 57, L111.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A soft hammer struck thick flake of grey brown flint with cream flecks. There are short step fractures at the proximal end where the platform has been prepared, removing some of the dorsal ridge and some nodular cortex. The distal end is thin and damaged and looks like it was attempted to remove flakes from a new opposing platform. As it failed this flake was removed to rejuvenate the core. The right margin has been semi-abruptly notched with some dorsal retouch running towards the distal end. Mercer(1981) illustrates an edged flake on page 131,fig 57, L112.

Pottery base sherd of coarse granitic ware made of admixture clay with large inclusions of quartz and granite. The fabric is a mid-brown colour throughout and there is a fracture running diagonally through the exterior of the sherd, where an oval section has spalled out of the sherd, which adds to its fragility. This type of admixture fabric is seen in Bronze Age vessels, dating from c.2100-1150 BC (Quinnell, forthcoming).

The surface is convex with long flake removal forming three long ridges. On the ventral side the left margin has some retouch mid way. There is small flake removal on the bulb of percussion and the surface is concave curved. The flint is mottled mid grey with pale grey flecks in colour. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 143, Fig. 5.129, No. F. 152 which is illustrated to the Neolithic period.

A short flake of translucent honey coloured pebble flint. The dorsal surface has parallel feathered blade scars truncated from the right and flake scars to the left. The platform edge was abraded and the remains are on the proximal end. The distal end is oblique and blunt and this and the cortically backed left margin give a safe grip for using the sharp right margin, which has retouch on the ventral side of the edge.
