An edge trimmed blade which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently made. The right margin of the ventral face exhibits discontinuous retouch with a low angle and is of edge extent forming a serrated edge. There is extensive spalling to the right area of the dorsal face. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p143, Fig 63, L206 which dates to the Neolithic.

Cast copper alloy fragment of a flanged blade from a socketed axe, semi-circular in plan, triangular in profile and lozenge-shaped in section. The blade edge is worn and incomplete so that it is only flanged on one side. The broken edge reveals an oblong aperture which is the end of the socket for the haft or handle of the axe. The original surface has mostly corroded away and there are patches of light green bronze disease. There is not enough detail to precisely date this fragment within the Late Bronze Age, but some comparanda are offered below. Pearce (1983) illustrates a simila…

An edge trimmed and blade which has been bi-facially retouched and expediently made. Both lateral margins of the dorsal face exhibits discontinuous retouch with a low angle and is of edge type extent. There has been an attempt at removal of the medial ridge. similar retouch on the ventral face has allowed for improved cutting function. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p129, Fig 56, L104 which dates to the Neolithic.

A blade, brown and grey in colour, possessing uni-facial retouch and which has been expediently made. This piece has been little worked but there has been some effort to remove the medial ridge. Damage is evident at both proximal and distal ends.

An edge trimmed flake, mid brown in colour, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently made. The right margin of the dorsal face exhibits discontinuous retouch with a low angle and is of edge extent. The same retouch is evident along the left margin resulting in serration along both lateral margins The blade has been snapped at the distal end. Chert blade, pentagonal in plan, curvilinear triangle in profile and ellipse in section. Bulb on ventral face, notched on the left edge, serrated retouch on the right edge, and gloss on the bulb. Retouch on the upper left edge of dorsal face. The chert is slate grey colour with lighter flecks and is therefore likely to be Portland chert. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 135, Fig. 5.121, No. F54, which is dated to the earlier Neolithic.

A rectangular piece of light grey coloured flint with oxide staining within its material. The dorsal face has a single prominent medial ridge running from the proximal to distal edges. The proximal edge appears straight and is consistent with the remains of a core striking platform, while the right margin is chipped in a lower position, it could have been utilised as a blade type tool. The distal edge is uneven and more flat in appearance with a slight nipples effect in the middle of the edge, could have been snapped or broken, again the left margin could have been utilised as a blade…

Rectangular piece of light grey coloured flint. The dorsal face exhibits a single medial ridge running between the proximal and distal edges. The proximal edge appears flat and may have been part of a core striking platform, while the distal edge appears straight and may have been broken or snapped off. The right margin appears to exhibit some retouch along its upper edge, which could be looked on as a scraper edge. The left margin also appears to have been subject to retouch along its upper area, this appears to be too steep for a blade and more in line with a scraper edge. The ventr…

Irregular ovoid shaped piece of translucent brown coloured flint, with 20% cortex remaining on its surface. The cortex covers the left side of the dorsal face between the proximal and distal edges, the distal edge has more covering, closer inspection of the proximal edge implies that it has been broken or snapped off. The right margin and two thirds of the distal edge are blade like in appearance, with no indication of obvious retouch marks on the edges. The centre of the dorsal face appears to have been struck previously, possibly when it was part of a core. The ventral face is smoot…

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a blade with use wear on both edges. The dorsal face has two long flake removals. Both edges have slight use damage, particulary the dorsal left margin. The ventral face has a bulbal scar and a trace of cortex at the distal end. The proximal end is broken. The flint is mottled pale grey in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear with only tertiary cortex. Mercer illustrates a similar piece on P127 Fig 55 No L91 which he dates to the Neolithic.

Flint pebble blade, oblong in plan and lozenge shaped in profile. The dorsal side has a snapped distal tip and a right margin and proximal end covered in cortex. The left margin is serrated with two notches. The flint is mid blue grey with a large central section of light grey inclusion in colouring. There is also light grey inclusion at the tip. The secondary cortex is dark beige grey in tone. Butler (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 131, Fig. 55, No. 1 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a notched blade. The dorsal face has two long fake removals from proximal to distal ends. There is a shallow notch on the the right margin, worked from the dorsal face. The ventral left margin ha sa shallow notch in a nearly central position. Ther eis a trace of edge wear on the right edge. The flint is mottled creamy grey in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear with only tertiary cortex. Flint blade which has been snapped at distal end - would have been longer originally. The other three sides/edges show signs of serration. It could be described as a serrated piece. There are incipient notches at lower right hand edge and at the centre of the right hand edge. There are signs of gloss on the ventral side with striations at the point on the edge where there are the notches. It is possible these could be natural, i.e. fractures in the flint but as they are too regular it is more likely to be from use wear. The flint is a medium grey colour with some inclusions and was …

A chunky looking blade with a finely serrated edge. It could be described as a piercer or serrated piece. The point has been blunted, probably from use. The serration is along the right and left hand edges and there are signs of gloss from use wear on the dorsal face. The right hand edge has patination along it. The flint is dark grey in colour with large speckles of lighter grey and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Butler [2005] illustrates a similar example on page 169, fig. 71, No. 6 which is dated to the later Neolithic.

A blade which has been truncated at distal end so could have been longer originally. It has also been snapped at the edge at the proximal end. It is possible that this could have been a notch before a piece was snapped off. This edge has been worked from the ventral side. The right hand edge, dorsal view, has been trimmed so the piece is an edge trimmed flake/blade. The proximal end shows signs of natural abrasion. There is patination on part of the dorsal and ventral sides. The flint is a pale grey colour and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer [1981] illustrates…

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a blade with a retouched distal end. Both dorsal faces have been retouched at the distal end, as has the proximal left margin. There is a possible small notch in the left margin above the retouched area. All retouch has benn made from the ventral face. The flint is brown in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear with only tertiary cortex. Mercer illustrates a similar piece on P139 Fig 61 No L178 which he dates to the Neolithic.

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a blade with use wear on both edges. Both lateral edges have use wear. They are almost denticulated. There is primary cortex on the dorsal face. The ventral face has use wear but no scars. The flint is transparent dark grey in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble by the look of its primary cortex. Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a blade with retouch. Both lateral edges and the proximal end have retouch. The distal end is broken. The lateral margins are retouched from the ventral face and the proximal end from both faces. The flint is mottled brown in colour.
