Silver coin. The finder suggests this is a Thistle Merk of James VI of Scotland (1567-1625), issue of 1601-1604, 8th coinage of James VI (Seaby 1972 page 78 is an apt illustration), however the reverse legend does not conform to published examples. Obverse description: Lion rampant left on crowned shield. Obverse inscription: [---]SCOTON[--] Reverse description: Crowned thistle. Clipped with loss of inscription. Diameter: 16.0mm, Weight: 0.75gms, die axis: 12.
