An incomplete Late Iron Age to Early Roman looped toggle (c. 100 BC-AD 100). The toggle survives in a poor condition. This artefact has been cast in one piece and most of the loop is missing. The main body is dumbbell-shaped and sub-circular in cross-section. The central block from which the loop extends has a partial circumferential groove. At the each side of the central block a short arm, circular in cross-section, extends to a dome-headed terminal Extending out from the central block is the remains of a sub-triangular attachment loop. One part of the loop is much thicker than …

Copper alloy Cheek Piece, toggle or slider fragment. Cast waisted cylindrical shaft, with one side of its slotted continuation remaining. The slot was in excess of 16mm long and circa 8mm wide. Decorative triangular recesses appear at either end of the less complete side, that closest to the slot being supplemented by a line of six crudely incised triangles within incised borders. The other retains a white surface flecked with red which may indicate that this, and perhaps the other, recess was filled with enamel. Polished by wear overall, and with extensive iron staining suggesting …

Incomplete cast copper alloy toggle dating from the late Iron Age to the early Roman period. The head of the toggle is sub-cylindrical. The central section consists of a wide band of three concentric ridges and interspersing grooves. A wide groove also marks each end of this central band, separating it from the two end segments, which are worn. An incomplete rectangular sectioned projection extends at a right angle from the central band forming a short arm. This would have originally expanded to form the loop. The object has a light green patina and is corroded. A similar example whi…

Iron age or Roman copper alloy toggle? 29mm long, 19mm wide and 3mm thick. The object is in good condition and weighs 3.73grams. The object consists of a triangular loop with a curved base and D shaped section. Emerging from its apex is a crescent shaped shaft with a circular section which tapers to a point. The object appears to be complete and seems to be a variant of the usual toggle form. It is similar to SUSS-FB19A3, although that is a sub- spherical toggle with a triangular loop.

An incomplete Late Iron Age to Early Roman cast copper-alloy toggle (c. 100 BC-c. AD 100). The head is sub-cylindrical throughout it width. The central segment has a groove at the top and the lower part extends to form a shaft for the loop which is missing. The end of the shaft bi-furcates where the start of the loop formed. It has a waist each side of the central segment and each terminal is circular when viewed from the sides. This toggle is pitted and corroded overall and has patches of a shiny patina. A small area of patina on one of the terminals suggests that the end was flat…

A fragment of a copper-alloy toggle or 'button and loop fastener' dating to the late Iron Age or early Roman period. The surviving fragment comprises a circular frame that is also circular in cross-section. An incomplete shank extends from the surface of one side and begins to curve outwards to the break. It is unclear whether the surviving fragment is the loop or the head.

Iron Age toggle, 19mm long and 8mm wide and thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 3.95grams. The object consists of a sub rectangular plate which has a second narrower plate emerging from the centre of its reverse. This plate has two rounded protrusions on its outer edge which corresponds to two circular holes, positioned near the join. Each of these holes is accompanied on alternate sides by a curved linear depression which is aligned with the hole and continues to the objects edge. This appears to have been done to help with sewing the object onto a garment. The upper su…
