This coin is a Merovingian tremissis of the mint-and moneyer type, of the period AD 580-670. The reverse inscription is illegible, but the obverse inscription shows that it was minted in, or possibly imitating, the town of Quentovic (Etaples, Pas-de-Calais). Quentovic was a major mint, and a major port, and finds from Quentovic are not unusual as finds in England, but the crude style makes it possible that this is a contemporary imitation minted elsewhere.
Obv: Crude diademed bust, r., + VVICUS FIT

A crudely cast, lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval date. It is conical, the top of the cone being truncated. There is a circular perforation, somewhat off-centre. There is no decoration. The whorl is 28.5mm in diameter and 11mm high. It weighs 37.54gm. This shape is not listed among examples from Coppergate or from Roman sites according to Walton Rogers (2007), so a Medieval date is suggested, but spindle whorls are very difficult to date as few are found in secure dated contexts. It is possibly most similar to Walton Rogers form A1, which may indicate an Early Medieval date.

The hoard contains a total of 66 coins, most of which are damaged to varying extents. They were found in two batches.
Batch One:
The coins were found in a roll at a depth of c. ten inches, leaving no doubt that the coins all represent a single group, presumably originally representing a rouleau of coins held together in a piece of cloth or leather. The coins were delivered to the FLO for North Yorkshire on May 10th, and to the British Museum on May 11th. The coins have not been cleaned or otherwise treated since their arrival at the BM, but were …
