A copper-alloy bar mount dating to the 11th or 12th century, probably from a book or casket. The mount is elongated in plan, plano-convex in cross-section and broken at both ends. One end is broken at a rivet hole, suggesting that the original length was much longer. The other end flattens out and begins to curve downwards, perhaps forming the cap-end to a lid or book cover. The body is decorated with two moulded animal-heads seen from above. One is next to the curved terminal and the other is near the broken rivet hole. The animal heads both have two large 'rabbit' ears and two large…

An enamelled copper-alloy mount, possibly from a hanging bowl. The mount is shovel-shaped, flat and decorated on one side only. The body contains a vertical row of four sub-rectangular frames of reserve metal, with an unclear wavey line at the base. To either side is a line with a triangular terminal. The recessed areas contain degraded enamel, now pale yellow-brown in colour but with traces of red. The reverse is undecorated and has traces of a shiney backing, perhaps an indication that it was soldered to a metal object such as a vessel.

A conical bi-chrome glass stud slightly taller than it is wide, width 16.5-17.5 mm, height 18mm, on a clay core. The glass is opaque grey to off-white and deep blue, semi-opaque and worked in a feathered pattern and wrapped around a fired clay core, visible at the base. The base diameter would fit a substantial setting and it would have projected for some distance. The top appears quite smooth and unchipped and the whole weighs 6.34g. There is also a possibility that this was a playing piece from a set, as mentioned for a glass cabochon found at Wearmouth (Cramp 2005, 91). Playing A…

An incomplete Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy mount, triangular in shape and flat in profile, decorated with a gilded triple-strand interlace pattern and on an iron backing. There is evidence of perforation near the pointed end of the mount, and a possible lug near the wide end. The mount is in good condition but the reverse is covered in iron corrosion products. The mount is 32.7 mm long, 50.99 mm wide, 6.92 mm thick and weighs 21.71 g. Kevin Leahy suggests that this a piece of Pressblech foil, attached to iron. He suspects that, given the iron, that it is a vandyke from a bucket, still …

Late Saxon mount. Slightly domed copper alloy disc, becoming thinner towards the edge, with four evenly spaced sub-triangular apertures disclosing an equal-armed cross within a circle, and a central blind hole on the convex face. Part of the edge is missing. Very worn, and corroded. There are traces of an unidentified white substance on all four arms of the cross on the reverse, perhaps solder, but no other trace of fittings or means of attachment. Perhaps a large brooch, the originally soldered catch-plate and pin-lug now missing. Not substantial enough to be a strap-distributor. Pro…

A cast copper-alloy object, possibly a mount, of probable Early-Medieval date. It is roughly shield-shaped in form, rectangular in section and slightly curved in profile with an unevenly cast back face and moulded and chip carved decoration on the front face. The top of the object has extensive tool marks and a slightly bevelled front edge, perhaps indicating that the surviving object has been re-worked from a larger item, such as a strap fitting, to give it its present form. The decoration on the front face appears to be moulded, but perhaps with some re-working or chip carving. It c…

A possible cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon disc brooch dating from about AD 700 - 900. The disc is decorated with an equal-armed cross. In two opposing quarters is a simple motif of a line radiating from the centre of the cross dividing the field into two, each side being a petal or wing shape with a rounded outer edge. Another quarter has a design in relief of a cross in a double circle. The last quarter is obscured by corrosion. The brooch has a central perforated hole which may have held a rivet; however, there is no other evidence of attachment. The object has been bent and is rathe…

A copper alloy Early Medieval or later mount. It has a central domed area which is sub-rectangular, and the remains of four protruding tabs, only one of which is intact. This is flat and rectangular, with a rounded outside edge and a circular perforation for a rivet cutting through to the body of the mount. The other three have all broken off, leaving the semi-circular outline of the former rivet holes. The domed area is decorated with a human face. Beneath a full fringe are the outlines of two eyes, of irregular oval shape. The metalwork is worn and details of other features are uncl…

A cast copper alloy Early-medieval knife terminal or fitting. See record: NMS-6B81F1: Copper-alloy mount, probably from the handle of a knife or sword. It is flat-ended and cylindrical, with four deep cut-outs with intervening points at the other end. Two points are distorted (bent out of shape). The sides, but not the unperforated flat end, are decorated with engraved lines forming rather crude arches which do not quite mirror the arched cut-outs. A fragment of copper alloy, probably a mount with a rivet still in place. The object is rectangular in plan and D shaped in section, with a separate thin wire copper alloy rivet surviving, with the ends thickened. The other circular rivet hole is empty. It is believed to be Early Medieval based on comparison to other similar finds, and because this site produces many early Medieval finds. Its function is unknown but it could have been part of binding, maybe from a shield or vessel. Compare SWYOR-7CAAE7, SWYOR-7CD8D7 and SWYOR-DBEDF7.

A copper alloy circular object, perhaps a mount, of probable Early Medieval date. It is a circular disc of copper alloy sheet. There are four circular holes through the plate, one in each angle of an incised cross with flared arms. There are traces of gilt in the incised lines. There is no evidence of attachment on the reverse, but one edge is broken, so there may have been an attachment there. The same design can be seen on early Medieval brooches such as NMS-698432 and NMS-993175, and on a mount HAMP-10B565 (though this is given a later date).

An Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) copper alloy circular mount dating to the 8th century. This mount is circular and dished, so the front surface is convex and the reverse is concave. There is a central perforation which is filled with iron corrosion suggesting an original iron pin which attached this mount to another element. The front surface is decorated with a chip-carved interlace pattern depicting an equal-armed cross with interlace filling the spaces between the arms. The interlace forms a cross-hatched or net-like pattern. The equal-armed cross has flaring terminals and the …

A copper-alloy mount of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. The head of the mount is sub-circular and of flat section. The upper surface is decorated with a 'chip carved' design which retains much of its original gilding. At the centre of this design there is a triple-stranded, interlaced quatrefoil. This quatrefoil is entwined with a single-stranded rectangle, on each of the four corners of which there is an angled loop whose outer limit projects beyond the edges of the otherwise circular head. The final element of the design is a ropework border which extends around the circumferen…

A copper-alloy mount of Early-Medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) date. The mount is roughly square, with a frame around a central panel decorated with a 'chip-carved' design in which a combination of V-shaped grooves and ridges defines a zoomorphic pattern. At the base of this panel is the head frame of a bird, aligned left to right (in red on the annotated photograph). The head is angular in appearance and contains a recessed, sub-rectangular eye. Copper-alloy mount, pr belt plate, with chip-carved gilded Style I zoomorphic decoration dating it to the early Anglo-Saxon period (6th century AD). The mount is rectangular with two rivets at the reverse. One rivet is broken close to the base. The complete rivet is circular in secton. 2.5mm in diameter and 7mm long. The decoration is in a single panel which follows the rectangular shape of the mount.
