Lead and copper alloy weight. Cast lead weight with inset copper alloy object, possibly a fragment of a Late Roman coin - it resembles a bearded bust trimmed from a radiate issue of circa 260-275, though this appearance may be fortuitous. The lead is patinated overall. The use of weights with insets is considered characteristic of Viking Age activity. This example was either casually made or has been partly melted. Its mass falls within 0.3gms of a Viking Dublin unit of 4.43gms. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950.
Length: 19.2mm, Width: 15.7mm, Thickness: 3.9mm, Weight: 4.71gms.

Lead possible weight. Cast roughly cuboid object. A soil filled cavity of diameter 3mm may have received a narrow pin, and the opposite face is indented. The mass may relate this to a Scandinavian system of measurement based on a module of 4.07gms; if so, this could represent five units, which is, however, an uncommon value in that putative duodecimal series. The indentations resemble those on a smaller object from topsoil at Middle Saxon Flixborough of mass 6.3gms. Such objects are also open to interpretation as playing pieces, as for the game of Hnafetafl. Suggested date: Possibly Ea…

Object type: GAMING PIECE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
A cast lead object, possibly a gaming piece of later Early-Medieval date. It is pyramidal in form with hollow back face and moulded decoration on the front face. The moulded decoration comprises four evenly spaced vertical ridges that run the length of the object and taper towards the rounded top. It measures 16.18mm in height, 18.31mm in length, 17.48mm in width, and 16.55g in weight.
Similar conical lead objects with hollow back faces and moulded decoration are noted from Suffolk and Cambridgeshire (for example SF-C01997, SF-50B784, SF-6F5256 and SF-6F7361). They are interpreted …

Lead weight. Cast rectangular weight; a discoloured patch on one surface resembles an embedded object, perhaps a coin, though, if so, it is uncertain of what denomination. The mass may also relate this object to Scandinavian-derived measurement systems employing units of 4.07gms or, from Dublin, 4.43gms. In the former case this object may represent five units. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950.
Length: 18.1mm, Width: 17.9mm, Thickness: 8mm, Weight: 20.61gms.

Lead
Weight. Cast plano-convex weight. The mass may indicate a relationship with Scandinavian systems based on modules of 4.07gms or a Dublin unit of 4.43gms, in which case this object could represent 10 units. Further weights of other forms were reported from the same location; of these, a flat cylindrical example was within 0.15gms of this weight. Suggested date: Possibly Early Medieval, 850-950.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a flat upper surface and an irregular lower surface, with off-centre aperture of diameter 8.3mm. Though the casting is somewhat crude, this appears to be an example of Walton Rogers form A1. The unusually heavy mass must indicate this whorl would be used for plying cord. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-850.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl of conical form with flattened upper and lower faces and central aperture of diameter 11mm. While the form resembles Walton Rogers' form A2, the larger hole may argue a slightly later date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000.

Lead and shell probable weight. Cowrie shell filled with lead. The shell was trimmed opposite its diagnostic vulva-shaped opening to permit lead to be poured into it; a little lead protrudes at the natural opening of the shell. Once solidified, the lead may itself have been trimmed flat. Though cowrie shells are among exotica characteristic of 'Final Phase' furnished Anglo-Saxon burials, the insertion of other objects into lead weights is more strongly associated with the Anglo-Scandinavian period. Units of 4.07gms and 4.43 gms are respectively associated with Scandinavia and Viking A…

Lead and iron probable weight, as identified by finder. Cast conical plano-convex weight with three iron stubs protruding from its lower sides (opposite each other) and base (between the others). Weights with embedded objects are usually dated to the Early Medieval period, and, like this example, may resemble contemporary game pieces. The mass may indicate this object represented four units of a module of 4.07gms, which is considered a Scandinavian-derived system of mensuration. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950.

An incomplete late Anglo-Saxon or early Medieval cast lead-alloy strap end of Thomas's Class E, dating broadly to the 10th to early 12th century AD. The object as it survives is rectangular, with one long edge split to take the strap. This edge has its two corners broken off where there are the remains of two circular rivet holes. The split here has a depth of 10.3mm and is undecorated. It is separated from the body of the strap-end by a ridge which turns a right angle to continue down the right-hand edge of the strap-end, behind the animal's rump.
Below the ridge the body of the s…
