A copper-alloy bar mount dating to the 11th or 12th century, probably from a book or casket. The mount is elongated in plan, plano-convex in cross-section and broken at both ends. One end is broken at a rivet hole, suggesting that the original length was much longer. The other end flattens out and begins to curve downwards, perhaps forming the cap-end to a lid or book cover. The body is decorated with two moulded animal-heads seen from above. One is next to the curved terminal and the other is near the broken rivet hole. An enamelled copper-alloy mount, possibly from a hanging bowl. The mount is shovel-shaped, flat and decorated on one side only. The body contains a vertical row of four sub-rectangular frames of reserve metal, with an unclear wavey line at the base. To either side is a line with a triangular terminal. The recessed areas contain degraded enamel, now pale yellow-brown in colour but with traces of red. The reverse is undecorated and has traces of a shiney backing, perhaps an indication that it was soldered to a metal object such as a vessel.

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of copper-alloy casting waste. The fragment is irregular but clearly shows a failed casting of an object, rather than being waste residues. The object is unclear but appears to have been intended to be semi-cylindrical in cross-section, with a curved top and flared base. The base clearly is divided into three claws or 'toes'. The casting somewhat resembles a Late Saxon stirrup terminal. The original object measures approximately 19mm x 11mm x 11mm, but is encased in a 'bloom' of casting waste.
