A copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Late Early-Medieval to Medieval date. The mount is sub-triangular, with outward bowing sides and a damaged apex loop. The decoration, executed in high relief, depicts a lion standing right, its left paw raised, its head and neck tilted backwards. The tail loops beneath the body, back across it and terminates above, in a loop which touches the ear of the animal. The head is located central to the top of the panel, the splayed jaws immediately below a rounded lobe protruding downwards from the apex loop. There are two circular perforations within…

An incomplete copper-alloy disc brooch, dating from the early part of the Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) period. Just over half of the disc remains, the rest having been lost in antiquity. At the middle of the flat upper surface, there is an incomplete punched ring-and-dot mark, with two concentric grooves around a central perforation. This central mark was originally surrounded by a ring of further such marks, three of which occupy the perimeter of the remaining portion of plate. The damaged hinge, located on the back of the brooch, approximately 5mm down from the top edge, consists…

An unidentified copper-alloy object, probably dating from the Late Early-Medieval to Medieval periods. The artefact comprises a sub-rectangular plate with relief-moulded decoration of typical Winchester style knotwork. The central element of the design consists of a vertical strand which bifurcates at either end. The base of the central strand is overlain by a horizontal strand which extends into an elaborate border. It is possible that the central element of the panel is a depiction of a human-like figure standing facing, his arms and legs splayed as if tied up. A moulded ornament…

Dimensions: 27.6mm long, up to 14.2mm wide, 1.2mm thick. Weight: 2.3g. A copper-alloy strap fitting of the 'ball ended' type of late early-medieval to medieval date (c. 11th century). The artefact comprises a sub-rectangular plate of flat section, the upper surface surface and sides embellished with moulded and incised decoration. At the top of the strap-end the sides angle upwards, towards a broken central projection. Just above halfway there is a pair of moulded transverse ridges, separated from each other by a central groove and extending slightly beyond the limits of the strap-end's vertical sides. Immediately below these ridges is an incised salt…

An incomplete copper-alloy pin, probably dating from middle part of the Early-Medieval period, but possibly later. The flattened sub-globular head is decorated by a series of deep, 'V-shaped' grooves. The vertical grooves extend downwards from the central point of the top of the head. There are no further incisions in the top of the head, but on the vertical sides, there are three incised horizontal rings, creating a series of segments. At its base the head tapers into the circular-sectioned shaft, the remaining portion of which is bent. A collar, grooved to give a ropework appearan…

Description: Large flat cross-shaped brooch made from silver, gold and niello, now incomplete and bent. The cross has outward-curved ends to the arms and inward-curved angles between; the end of one arm is missing. The cross has a narrow undecorated border, and in the centre is a circular reserved area with a central perforation for a missing rivet. Reserved strips run from the border to the central reserved circle, forming a diagonal cross. The crudely executed piece has arms of oval section and there is an ovoid knop on each point. Close examination of these knops gives no indication that any has been broken or cut off; however, if the removal of the stem occurred in antiquity, it is possible that this point may have subsequently worn smooth. An Early-Medieval copper-alloy ear-scoop. The exact means of construction of this piece is uncertain, but it would appear than the lower half of the shaft has been cast as a solid piece, while the upper portion has been formed by folding inwards the two sides of an integrally cast sheet. No such folding has taken place at the loop, which has a horizontal top, converging sides and a single circular perforation. The upper surface of the head also bears a number of transverse grooves, and these continue into the rectangular-sectioned shaft. The basal scoop has been crudely formed by sq…

It is of stout construction and has been formed by joining together two plates of equal size, a central gap retained at the top to allow insertion of the now-missing strap. A copper-alloy stirrup terminal of probable 11th century date. The artefact is semi cylindrical for two thirds of its length. At the slightly narrower end, it bends upwards at approximately 30 degrees, the shorter projection being of rectangular section and also having a hollow underside. Both ends of the mount appear to be damaged. On the underside, the edges bear traces of a possible solder. The piece measures 31.5mm long, up to 10.3mm wide, 6.8mm high and weighs 5.49g.

An incomplete copper-alloy stirrup mount, probably dating from around the 11th century. The piece takes the form of a half cylinder, the underside open, the upper surface decorated with the remains of an outward-facing zoomorphic head. The object measures 13.1mm long, 10.9mm wide, 6.9mm high and weighs 2.56g. The form of this piece suggests it may be one of the shorter mounts from the top of the stirrup arch (see Williams 1997: fig. 4).
