A incomplete copper alloy object, probably a mount, of Medieval to Post Medieval date, c. 1200-1800 AD. The object has been fashioned from a rectangular copper alloy sheet, pressed with a repeating decoration and silvered or tinned on the decorated surface. The sheet has been pierced on one of the shorter ends with three very small circular holes, with one still potentially holding a fragment of a rivet intact; the other short end has been broken. The decoration consists of a raised series of overlapping sub-rectangular shapes with one trilobed end. A vertical line runs down the centr…

An undatable but probably Bronze Age to Iron Age (2150 BC - AD 100) copper alloy openwork mount, curving in profile and lozenge-shaped. It measures 34.80x36.84x2.09mm and weighs 5.9g. The mount is concave to the reverse and convex to the front. Its edges are concave. In two opposing corners is a rivet hole, 2.45mm and 2.67mm in diameter. If the mount is viewed with the rivet holes horizontally aligned, at the centre of the mout are two circular perforations, 8.15mm and 8.41mm in diameter, vertically aligned. A line of circular punches flanks the edge of each and a further line of ci…

An incomplete, copper alloy probable Mount of the Roman to Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 43 - AD 1700. The object is broadly circular in plan and broadly D shaped in section. The obverse has been decorated with a raised central pellet, which appears to have sustained some damage. The pellet is surrounded by two raised concentric circles, with a groove between and round the outside edge of the object. The central pellet protrudes further than the concentric circles. The reverse appears flat and has a circular perforation located just off centre. The reverse is undecorated…

Lead Possible Mount. Cast strip of sub-triangular section with two flat faces which suggest this object occupied the right angle between two flat surfaces. The third surface bears eight rounded bands arranged in two identical sets, both diminishing in size towards flat-ended terminals. Lightly patinated overall, with brown staining which may suggest contact with ferruginous clay or iron. Suggested date: Unknown 40-1800. Length: 50.5mm, Width/Height: 12.3mm, Thickness: 6.6mm, Weight: 25.10gms.

Cast copper alloy vessel mount in the shape of a satyr dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. The mount is complete and undamaged, showing a satyr's bust (chest, shoulders and head) on the obverse and a hollow, solder-filled reverse. The bust has a youthful face with long wavy hair, parted in the centre of the head. The friendly-looking face has moulded eyes, eyebrows, nose and a smiling mouth. There are also two small, curled-up, incipient horns on the satyr's forehead. The mount would have ornamented an item of furniture or a box or small chest. Martin Henig suggests that q…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman mount. The mount was once figure of eight in plan, but is now broken and one end loop is incomplete. It has hollow cast reverse and a rounded front. The mount is formed from two opposing crescents, back to back, which terminate in broad 'trumpet heads'. An integral loop then spans the opposing trumpet heads at either end to form the end loops of the figure of eight. The ends of the trumpet heads are raised ridges. The reverse of the mount is plain and hollow behind the trumpet mouldings. At one end is a short integral circular shaft with an integr…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman openwork belt mount, probably associated with the military and dating from the 3rd century AD. The mount is quite small and is formed from two opposing elongated ovals with an open circle in the centre (one side incomplete). There is the remains of another openwork element beneath but this is also incomplete, its completed form enigmatic. The reverse of the mount has a large integrally cast rounded shank with wide flattened head that would have secured the mount to a leather strap. Another Roman belt mount (BERK-BE0D37) was found in the same area.

A complete, Roman, cast, copper alloy, phallic mount. Phalluses were a popular representation and unlike the situation today were openly displayed on public buildings. They were sometimes worn by the military as amulets or good luck charms to ward off the evil eye. They could represent fertility, masculinity and strength. This example has two small, now broken, integral attachment pins one at each end on the back which is otherwise recessed. There appears to be little wear and an attractive even brown patina which may be due to the water logged ground conditions in which it was found.…

An incomplete copper-alloy mount in the form of a sitting bird. The bird is three-dimesional and has a solid oval head with a long beak. The body is convex, pointed oval in plan and has two incomplete stubs of metal projecting from the rim on the underside. These two tabs would have joined to form a circular loop. The object has a mid-green patina with small areas of pitting on the surface. The bird depicted resembles a duck and other similar examples appear to support this interpretation. Similar mounts from Lincolnshire are known from Claxby by Alford (Ambrose 1978: 83), North W…

A cast copper alloy belt mount. The mount has a convex oval dome set in the centre of an incomplete, flat rectangular or oval plate. The perimeter of the plate is badly abraded. The dome is divided into two by a line down the centre. There would have been two integral flat headed shanks on the reverse but on part of one remains. This mount is similar to the range of 'vulvate' mounts known from many military sites. Some mounts of this type have been found with an integral suspension loop for hanging a pendant at the base. An example of such a find comes from Niederbieber, now in the…

An incomplete copper-alloy mount of Roman date. The central portion of the symmetrical mount is octagonal and contains a solid square surrounded by four openwork trapezia. There are three projecting elements surviving, although it is likely that there was originally a fourth of equal form. Each of these equally-spaced projections takes the form of a damaged circular plate, with a concave upper surface, at the centre of which is a circular aperture. An oval-sectioned, integrally cast rivet projects backwards from the centre of the mount, terminating in a cuboidal stop. The object mea…

Each is 'T-shaped', the phallus itself being of triangular section, its straight sides gradually converging towards the raised, moulded tip. The underside of the phallus is hollow; at either end of this hollow is an integrally cast, circular-sectioned rivet. Dimensions and further details: Verulamium…

A Roman mount, 43-300 AD. Petal shaped mount, rounded at one end and gently pointed at the other. A central hole is slightly off-centre and the mount is D-shaped in section. There are scratches and gouges on the surface. The roundedness and the metalwork quality make the piece more likely to be Roman however an enameled example has been dated to the medieval period, though this piece is more tapered at one end: see LIN-9D5607
