A fragment of a copper-alloy socketed sickle blade of Bronze Age date. Weight is 12.08g, length of the fragment is 46.69mm, width is 16.73mm and thickness is 3.59mm. The cross section is oval or a sub lozenge. The edges are quite chewed, but Cyril Fox lists parallels from the River Thames (Tilehurst, Berks.; Plate XXIV, no 5), Norwich (Norfolk, Plate XXVI, no. 12) which have a similar straight blade. Due to the fragmentary remains of this blade it is impossible to determine whether the sickle was laterally or vertically socketed. Most of these socketed sickles are part of the Ewart Pa…

A medieval silver crucifix pendant. Three arms of equal length with a long lower arm. There is a suspension loop at the top of the upper arm. In the centre of the pendant is engraved a cross potent with a letter at the end of each arm, these being at the top with A, G on the right arm, L on the left and A on the lower arm spelling the word AGLA. This is thought to be derived from the Latin transliteration of the initial letters of the Hebrew phrase 'Ata gibor le'olam Adonai', meaning 'Thou art mighty for ever, Oh Lord', and may have been considered to be one of the names of God during…

A copper-alloy coin weight. The weight is square in plan and sub-rectangular in section with slightly sloping sides. This is most probably an Angel weight of James I 2nd coinage, revalued. Obverse shows Crown over XI.s (11 shillings) all in a circle. The reverse is very worn but seems to show George spearing the dragon under his feet. It should weigh 71 grains or 4.6 grams. However, the reverse is almost illegible, and as such it could also possibly be a Double Crown weight of James I, 2nd coinage, revalued. This would have the same obverse as the Angel weight but with a differen…

County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy mount or possibly lock pin dating from the Roman period, that is c. AD43-410. Only half of the object remains and the edges are worn smooth suggesting that the original break is ancient. The complete head was circular in shape with crescentric moulded grooves and a large lip around the central projection on the obverse. There is another projection on the reverse, but that is far more worn and could have been an attachment loop/shaft or similar.
