Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing part of its corroded iron pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve; they are slightly asymmetrical. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. Around, as implied, is an iron concretion - the corroded pin. There is further iron corrosion product on one of the outer edges. The buckle frame has a mid-/dark-green patina w…

Medieval cast copper alloy buckle frame with ornate outer edge. The outer edge is formed into three lobes with small projecting knops on the outerside of the corners. The strap bar is recessed and narrowed with lobed knops at either end. It is triangular in section with a flat back and angled sides. It is 17.9mm long, 13.1mm wide, 2.7mm thick and wieghs 1.10 grams.
This is an unusual variation on the Medieval D-shaped frames of late 12th to 14th century date (Egan and Pritchard 1991:22). SWYOR-F98F85 on this database is similar and complete with the plate.
