A copper-alloy bar mount dating to the 11th or 12th century, probably from a book or casket. The mount is elongated in plan, plano-convex in cross-section and broken at both ends. One end is broken at a rivet hole, suggesting that the original length was much longer. The other end flattens out and begins to curve downwards, perhaps forming the cap-end to a lid or book cover. The body is decorated with two moulded animal-heads seen from above. One is next to the curved terminal and the other is near the broken rivet hole. The animal heads both have two large 'rabbit' ears and two large…

A pressed sheet copper-alloy mount. The mount is rectangular with a pelleted perimeter. The body is decorated with a large letter 'S' in the form of a serpant. The top left terminal is in the form of a dragon head while the bottom left terminal curls over in the form of a tail. A rivet hole is located at the top and bottom. The pressed metal suggests that this is post-medieval to modern in date.

An incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy mount, dating to c. 17th-early 18th centuries AD. The mount is curved and in the form of a fleur-de-lis, although the central fleur is missing. The remaining fleur-de-lis petals curve in a concave fashion. The mount is undecorated on its outer face. The rear face has one integral spike, circular in cross-section. The mount is of an even green patina and the break at the central fleur is old, probably due to post-depositional damage. The mount measures 15.14mm long, 22.48mm wide and it weighs 2.93 grams. Cast copper alloy mount dating to the Medieval period. The object is sub-trapezoidal in plan and flat. The outer face is decorated with a central raised triangle, within another triangle. Curved ridges radiate out from either side within a square at the base of which are two spirals divided by a raised oval. This forms a possible zoomorphic design. Within the oval and surrounding the raised ridges the object is infilled with toffee-brown enamel. The rear of the object is undecorated and there are no visible signs of attachment. The object has a dark brown patina and is in good conditi…

An almost complete cast copper alloy mount of post-medieval date. The plate of the mount is heart-shaped and domed, with a concave reverse. Extending from the pointed end of the heart is an open-worked trefoil. The two side lobes are round with holes in the centre, while the central lobe is oval and solid. The front is otherwise undecorated. Projecting from the reverse of the heart are two spikes, one has broken off, while the second points inwards. These attachment spikes help to indicate a 16th or 17th Century date and it is likely that this mount was used as a horse harness …

A sheet copper alloy Post-Medieval hooked mount. It has a trefoil terminal with a rivet hole in the upper foil, and a further rivet at the centre between the two lower foils. The mount expands into a small knopped plate before tapering to a hook. This bends backwards to form an almost-enclosed loop, from which a ring is suspended. The latter is faceted and flattened, and there are traces of a white metal coating on both sides of the mount. It measures 40.4mm in length and is 15mm in maximum width. The hook is 4mm in width and the ring is 11.5mm in diameter and 2.5mm in width. The mo…

A corroded Post Medieval copper alloy mount in the shape of a heart. The reverse side is flat and there are two spikes which are both bent in a hoop towards the centre. The copper alloy has a patchy green patina through which red metal shows. According to Egan; Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition (2005); p40; No 136; the provision of double pointed prongs has been claimed as a characteristic of horse harness mounts. SUSS-5A7F53 is a similar but longer mount. It cites a heart shaped two-pronged mount in Read; Metal Artefacts of Antiquity (2001) p37; No. 323 which i…

Roman copper alloy object, possibly a mount. The object appears to be an incomplete openwork plate, with some extremities worn or broken off, and might originally have been sub-oval in plan. The object is assymetrical, with a roughly circular part with two curving projections, joined by a thick curving projection to two curving sides joining in a point. The circular part has indications of possible attachment points in the form of circular indentations which may represent the edges of a large rivet or patch of solder. The openwork design is reminiscent of Roman mounts and buckles, …

An enamelled copper-alloy mount, possibly from a hanging bowl. The mount is shovel-shaped, flat and decorated on one side only. The body contains a vertical row of four sub-rectangular frames of reserve metal, with an unclear wavey line at the base. To either side is a line with a triangular terminal. The recessed areas contain degraded enamel, now pale yellow-brown in colour but with traces of red. The reverse is undecorated and has traces of a shiney backing, perhaps an indication that it was soldered to a metal object such as a vessel.
