Lead Possible Mount. Cast strip of sub-triangular section with two flat faces which suggest this object occupied the right angle between two flat surfaces. The third surface bears eight rounded bands arranged in two identical sets, both diminishing in size towards flat-ended terminals. Lightly patinated overall, with brown staining which may suggest contact with ferruginous clay or iron. Suggested date: Unknown 40-1800. Length: 50.5mm, Width/Height: 12.3mm, Thickness: 6.6mm, Weight: 25.10gms.

Copper alloy with white metal plating Possible mount fragment. Cast flat-backed strip with a curved end, a slightly raised rectangular field, and a possible collared at the other end of the object, where it is probably broken. There is the suspicion of cross-hatched ornament on the rectangular panel, and slight traces of tin plating. An alternative identification as a book fitting, or perhaps a strap end, might also be entertained. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Length: 41.9mm, Width: 8.4mm, Thickness: 2.1mm, Weight: 5.45gms.

Copper alloy, probably tinned Probable Mount fragment. Cast flat-backed plate with cross-hatched central field of lozenges in relief and seven concave settings, three on one side and four on the other; a circular boss at one end of the object has a similar central setting. The hatched surface appears intended to afford grip, so this may be an ornamental fitting for a knife, brush or tool handle. The boss bears concentric milled lines suggesting machine finishing. An apparently unassociated white metal disc with flange was submitted with this object, and is of similar recent date. S…

Lead Alloy, probably painted. Possible Mount. Cast figurine representing a standing bird of prey on a sub-rectangular base with curved ends, of thickness 3.3mm; the head has a flat top with a beak short curved beak, feathers are suggested by moulded low relief on the folded wings, and the feet or claws are represented by a subdivided crescentic curve. The back of the figurine is flat, and at right angles to the base, and both these flat surfaces reveal grey coloured metal; the surface is otherwise a patinated brown showing from under a coat of black paint. The unpatinated conditio…

Copper alloy with enamel Mount. Cast oval plate, shaped to fit a curved surface, with a pair of fixing holes of diameter 3.1mm which were secured by bolts or rivets with heads circa 6mm wide. A cast design of a ragged saltire retains scraps of thick dark blue enamel on its cross arms, white enamel immediately adjacent to the arms, and with pale blue enamel apparently filling much of the field between the arms. The object may have been attached to machinery. Cursory survey has not identified an institutional user for this combination of colours, though a Scottish association is poss…

Copper alloy Mount. Cast openwork plate with stamped decoration comprising an ovulo border and floral or vegetal scrolls; a patch of solder and a spot of possible brazing on the back suggest this was fixed to another object. A U-shaped clip bent at right angles on the back may have assisted this fastening. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900. Height: 37.3mm, Width: 57.6mm, Thickness: 0.8mm, Weight: 7.18gms.

Lead alloy probable mount. Cast low relief flat-backed mount in a Classical idiom, representing a fanged mask with wide-open mouth, heavy brows and tresses of long hair. The piece is influenced by Renaissance forms, though has a slightly disturbing aspect which it shares with a number of locally produced pieces of broadly contemporary date. A possibly drilled apical aperture of diameter 5mm probably served for attachment, perhaps along with another fixing which has indented the back; if used for suspension this loop would tend to make the object hang sideways, and it is not worn as wo…

Copper alloy with traces of gilding mount. Sub-rectangular openwork mount. A crudely modelled and hairless concavo-convex (i.e. hollow backed) mask with slit mouth, a ridge nose, and large almond shaped eyes occupies the centre of a sub-rectangular frame. The frame is decorated with angular stepped ornament below the mask, with a bordered field above it, and billeted edges above and below it. The decoration has been enhanced by crude notching within the frame. Traces of gilding are retained, most extensively on one side of the mask. Corroded and abraded. The hollow on the back of the …

Copper alloy mount. Cast six-pointed star, slightly concavo-convex at its centre. The 'points' of the star are actually curvilinear, each resembling a bell or petal with a knop at its narrow end. A ragged central sub-rectangular hole of length 6.4mm appears to indicate where the object was fastened, and roughly removed. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length: 30.7mm, Width: 27.1mm, Thickness: 1.2mm, Weight: 4.01gms.

White Metal Possible Mount. Cast metal strip, broken in half, with upper curved edges and a straighter lower edge which suggest the object has been trimmed here, perhaps to remove an unwanted text or title. An embossed motif, which appears reversed on the back, comprises a cushion crown over four elongated leaves arranged as a saltire flanked by a pair of anchors on a ground of further similar leaves. The scheme recalls that of military or institutional badges. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900. Length: 44.5mm, Height: 12.4mm, Thickness: 1.2mm, Weight: 4.19gms.

Copper alloy with gilding, possible mount. Cast flat sub-circular plate with a trapezoidal lug with engrailed edge, retaining gilding on one face. The form resembles that of medieval tin and lead alloy ampulla-shaped spangles, though this object is a little larger and lacks the surface detail that class of objects bear, so the similarity may be fortuitous. Suggested date: Possibly Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Length: 19.2mm, Width: 13.0mm, Thickness: 1.5mm, Weight: 1.27gms.

Copper alloy mount, as identified by finder. Cast sub-triangular plate with scalloped edges, possibly from a position mounted at the corner of a rectangular object - possibly a book cover. A pair of pelta-shaped cut-outs, whose edges are lightly bevelled on the back of the object, flank an attachment hole of diameter 2mm. Haphazardly positioned punch-marks of diameter 2.8mm run along the edges, with a further seven larger punch-marks of diameter 4.5mm possibly arranged around one of the smaller marks on the field between the cut outs. Two deeper pairs of straight punch marks occur clo…

Silver mount. Cast plate in the form of a cross potent, now roughly folded and flattened. The motif might be apt to the decoration of the cover of a missal, breviary or reliquary. A symbol resembling two conjoined lozenges is stamped into the bar at the end of one of the arms. When combined with smaller similar crosses in its angles, this symbol would become the Cross of Jerusalem, the badge of that Crusader kingdom - the military Orders held extensive lands in eastern England, though their local importance was primarily economic. This object is to be considered as Treasure on account…

Tin mount. Pressed metal concavo-convex mount in the form of a five-lobed leaf with the ribs of the leaf represented; a circular loop of internal diameter 1.1mm at the stem end may have served for riveted attachment. Copper alloy mount. Cast plate with motif resembling a quatrefoil and saltire, or perhaps a seven pointed star from which an arm with lunate end projects. A copper alloy rivet of length exceeding 8mm and diameter 1.5mm has been partly withdrawn from the middle of the plate. This substantial fixing might hint at a mechanical function, perhaps with the lunate end of the plate engaging another element of a clasp. The lunate plate bears low and narrow relief resembling a flat-topped letter A. Suggested date: Later Medieval, 1350-1450. Length: 35.8mm, Width: 25.5mm, Thickness (clear o…

Copper alloy Mount fragment. Cast D section strip with integral rivet or lug at one of its two broken ends. A design in relief comprises a longitudinal mid rib marked by a line of pellets, flanked by borders of aligned pellets with two ring and dot on either side of the mid rib. This decoration meets a transverse pair of lines which may be close to a terminal (now lost). The original object may have been in the form of a cross, as with some brooches, or a simpler bar shaped mount.
