Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date. The symmetrical mount takes the form of a cross with a lozenge-shaped cell at its centre. A groove projects outwards from each of the four points of this cell, dividing the surface of each arm into two and extending as far as the distal end, where it appears to divide a pair of circular knops with recessed surfaces. The integral rivet, located at the centre of the mount's underside, is of circular section and has a flat end. The mount is in good condition, with a dark greenish-brown patina and little corrosion. Dimensions:…

A Late Medieval copper-alloy bar mount. The mount has a central hemisphere, hollow on the underside, its convex upper surface decorated with a band of six parallel, transverse grooves, some of the ridges between incised to create a ropework effect. Above and below this central hemisphere is a sub-rectangular projection containing an in situ copper-alloy rivet. Dimensions: 20.9mm long, 10.5mm wide, 5.8mm high. Weight: 1.89g. Two similar mounts were found in excavations in London, both in mid 14th to late 14th/early 15th century contexts (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 213/fig. 134, nos. …

A post-Medieval copper-alloy mount. The object comprises a slightly domed plate in the form of an acorn. The widest point is the cupule, which has a segmented surface, a grooved band at the top and a knop projecting from its base. The tapering nut terminates in a rounded knop. On the reverse are the remains of two added copper-alloy rivets, both of which have been deliberately bent downwards. Dimensions: 38.1mm long, 20.5mm wide, 3.1mm thick. Weight: 7.49g. This is a common form of post-Medieval mount, further examples on the PAS database including BH-35BB55 and BH-79EE10. Brian…

An incomplete copper-alloy bar mount of Medieval date. The bar is of sub-rectangular section (having a convex upper surface), and parallel-sided along its entire length. At one end is a thinner terminal plate in the form of a stylised fleur-de-lis with a circular rivet hole at its centre; at the opposite end only a protruding collar, identical to that on the intact terminal, remains. The mount is heavily corroded. Dimensions: 75.8mm long, up to 13.5mm wide (terminal) and 4.5mm thick. Weight: 11.28g. The form of this piece suggests it is probably a mount from a casket or chest. S…

A copper-alloy mount of post-Medieval (probably 17th century) date. The central portion of the convex-surfaced mount is trapezoidal. Surmounting this is a parallel-sided, vertical projection which terminates in a rounded top. A similar, albeit much shorter, projection is located at the base of the trapezoidal portion. To the reverse of the mount have been added two copper-alloy rivets, both of which have been deliberately bent upwards in order to secure the piece. The surfaces of the mount have been tinned or silvered. Dimensions: 26.8mm long, 10.4mm wide (max), 2.1mm thick. Weigh…

A Medieval copper-alloy hooked mount. The main body of the mount is parallel-sided and of trapezoidal section. At the top, a waisted collar separates the body from an oval lobe with a pointed projection above. At the bottom, there is a forward-facing hook. The reverse is flat, with two integral rivets. Dimensions: 30.8mm high, 5.3mm wide, 1.9mm thick (not including rivets). Weight: 1.96g. A 13th to 14th century date is suggested for this mount, based on it's similarity to a common form of harness pendant suspension mount (cf. BH-AC4764). The upper terminal probably represents a …

A copper-alloy mount of Medieval date. The corroded mount takes the form of a three dimensional representation of an eagle-like bird, shown as if in flight, the head, wings and tail forming a cross. The moulded head of the bird is set slightly higher than the body. Like the rest of the bird, it is somewhat stylised in appearance, having two recessed pellets for the eyes and a downward-curving beak. Together, the two wings and back form a rectangle. Feathers are indicated through the use of a number of vertical grooves on the wings, while the plain back is perforated by a single copp…

A pair of stamped copper-alloy sheet-metal mounts, probably dating from the Late Medieval or post-Medieval periods. The mounts are of very similar appearance, each taking the form of a four-petalled flower head. At the centre is a raised pellet surrounded by four sub-circular petals; a rim of two ridges and an internal groove forms a perimeter border around the mount, with the point of a petal protruding from each of the four external angles. On the reverse, both mounts have traces of iron corrosion from an otherwise missing central rivet. One mount has a light green patina, while t…

A copper-alloy mount of Roman date. The largest element of the openwork mount takes the form of a deeply moulded, three-tiered crescent with a convex surface and inward-curving points. Contained between these points, bordered by a pair of angled mouldings, is the base of the second element, a 'T-shaped' plate. This base is bulbous and has a vertical groove at the centre. The distal ends of the top bar of the 'T' curve downwards, into damaged vertical ribs, which join up with the sides of the crescent. The underside of the crescent is hollow. The long sides of the mount converge towards the bottom, where there is a wider collar with incised transverse groove. A Medieval copper-alloy bar mount. The mount has a circular frame at its centre, from above and below which projects a triangular-sectioned, gradually tapering arm. Bar mounts of this form were found in excavations in London, the majority in late 13th to mid 14th century contexts (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 213-214/fig. 134, cf. nos. 1154, 1157 and 1158).
