A flint scraper formed on a flake of secondary debitage, dating to the Neolithic period. The object is plano-convex in cross-section and irregular in plan. It curves slightly in profile. Less than 20% of the original cortex remains on the upper face of the object. Both of the long edges have been retouched. There is a small notch out of the side at the proximal end which is likely to be a break rather than deliberate. The flake is formed on a blade of dark grey flint. Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint of probable Neolithic date. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are clearly visible at the proximal end. There appears to be some retouch on left lateral edge and a small area on the right lateral edge. It may possibly have been used as a scraper. Whilst the flint superficially resembles that of an arrowhead the retention of the bulb of percussion and the lack of retouch on the ventral face suggests that is not one. The flint is a pale grey in colour. Find not photographed.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint flake of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake appears to have some retouch along both lateral edges, perhaps to form scraping edges. It has a clear bulb of percussion and bulbar scar on the ventral face at the proximal end. There are several negative scars from previous flake removal on the dorsal face. The flint is of a mottled grey colour. The tool looks as though it may have been snapped and as the break has a similar patina to the rest of the flint it seems likely that this is an ancient break rather than recent damage. Find not photographed.

A knapped flint of prehistoric date, possibly Neolithic. The flake does not appear to have been retouched after having been struck from the core. The flake is not of a good quality flint and has inconsistencies including an area of cortex. This is perhaps why it was not selected for further adaption. It is a pale grey to white in colour with an area of pale brown cortex. Find not photographed.

A prehistoric flint flake, probably Neolithic in date, perhaps used as a cutting blade. The bulb of percussion and bulbar scar are clearly visible on the ventral face at the proximal end. A ridge runs down the centre of the dorsal face, making the flint triangular in section. The tip is missing and there appears to be some retouch, particularly down the right lateral edge, perhaps to facilitate hafting. The flint is a dark grey colour with cream to white speckled inclusions. Find not photographed.

A prehistoric flint flake, probably Neolithic in date and probably a waste flake struck during the knapping process, subsequently used as a cutting blade. The flake has a clear bulb of percussion and a bulbar scar at the proximal end. Cortex remains at the distal end and it is possible this was deliberately left to facilitate comfortable handling, allowing the left lateral edge to be used for cutting. This edge has some damage, perhaps from use. The flint has a dark grey colour with white/grey inclusions. The cortex is a pale ochre in colour. Find not photographed.

Although the platform is missing, there is a strong bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples present on the ventral surface. No signs of retouch or further knapping are visible to suggest that this flake was modified as a tool. It measures 35.37 mm long, 22.75 mm wide, 4.83 mm thick and weighs 6.99 grams.

Two flakes and one fragment of a flake. All are tertiary pieces although one is mottled with opaque, sub-cortex like material. All show evidence of previous parallel removals from the same platform. One is in pale grey flint, the others are mid-grey with paler mottling. They weigh 13.20 grams in total and are probably Neolithic or Early Bronze Age in date.

Proximal end of a knapped chert tertiary blade or flake of probably Neolithic date. The bulb of percussion has been lost to more recent, unpatinated breaks. There is an irregular break at the distal end that is also unpatinated and presumably more recent. Arises on the dorsal face suggest multi-directional working. The chert is a mid rown grey with a white patina developing on the older surfaces. It is 29.8mm long, 29.7mm wide and 7.2mm thick; it weighs 6.16 grams.

The blade is triangular in section with a prominent ridge down the dorsal face with evidence for two previous parallel removals from the core. An edge trimmed flake which has been bi-facially retouched and expediently made. The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits discontinuous retouch with a low angle and is of edge type extent, giving a serrated edge. The same retouch is evident on the ventral face giving an improved serration function. The right margin exhibits extensive cortex covering which allows for comfortable handling. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p143, Fig 63, L200 which dates to the Neolithic.

A notched flake, dark and mid grey in colour, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently made. The notch has been created on the left margin of the dorsal face near to the distal end. The central area has been thinned for more comfortable handling. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on p131, Fig 55, 5 which dates to the Neolithic.

An edge trimmed flake, which has been uni-facially retouched and has been expediently made. The distal end of the dorsal face exhibits partial retouch with a low angle and is of edge type extent which gives a serrated edge. The same retouch is evident on the ventral face leading to improvement in serration function. The piece is snapped at the proximal end and left margin intersect. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p129, Fig 56, L104 which dates to the Neolithic.

An edge trimmed flake, grey and brown in colour with cream inclusions, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently made. The distal end of the dorsal face exhibits discontinuous retouch with a low angle and is of edge type extent giving a serrated edge. The same retouch is evident on the ventral face improving serration function.

An edge trimmed flake which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently made. The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits partial retouch with a low angle and is of edge type extent. The same type of retouch is evident along the proximal end, although becoming continuous, which results resulting in serration along both these edges. Both left and right margins on the ventral face exhibit discontinuous retouch with a low angle and is of edge extent to improve serration function. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p131, Fig 57, L114 which dates to the Neolithic.

An edge trimmed flake, cream and grey in colour, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently made. The right margin of the dorsal face exhibits discontinuous retouch of abrupt angle and is of long type extent. Numerous lines of weakness have led to fracturing during working of the piece. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p129, Fig 56, L97 which dates to the Neolithic.

An edge trimmed flake, dark grey in colour with brown mottling, which has been bi-facially retouched and expediently made. The right margin of the dorsal face exhibits discontinuous retouch of low angle and edge type extent forming a serrated concave edge. There is similar retouch on the ventral face which improves serration function. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p129, Fig 56, L104 which dates to the Neolithic.
