Byzantine coin: Copper alloy follis of (Constantine VII) and Romanus I (AD 920-44), struck at Constantinople. Dumbarton Oaks 25; BMC 14-29. As this coin was found in a garden and has no ancient patina, it is probably a modern loss.

Copper alloy follis of Heraclius (and Heraclius Constantine) (AD 610-41), struck at Constantinople, but overstruck on an earlier coin. It is difficult to be sure which type this coin is because it is overstruck and possibly also doublestruck, but it is probably MIB 159-60 / DOC 76-83 or MIB 164-5 / DOC 105-16. An anonymous follis, class A2, attributed to Basil II or Romanus III, AD 976-1034.
Die axis probably 8 o'clock, weight is 8.14g, diameter is 32.46mm and thickness is 2.04mm. The coin has a sub-rectangular perforation that measures 4.02mm x 3.01mm. Both sides of the flan are worn. One side seems to show a haloed bust forward facing. The other side of the flan probably originally had four lines of writing across the centre of the flan, the line closest to the perforation is extrememly worn leaving three that are visible but now illegible. The edges of the perforation bend outwards on …
