An incomplete, corroded and damaged copper-alloy medieval sheet buckle plate. It is broadly rectangular in plan and all that remains is a single half, broken at the weaker tabs at the frame end and abraded through a perforation at the other. There is a central notch for the pin, which is flanked by two rectangular projections, the tabs, which would have folded round on themselves and extended into the other half of the fold. They provide a recess for the frame. The artefact has a mid-green patina with patches of off-white corrosion product. The attachment end has been bent downward…

A cast copper-alloy rectangular frame from a single-looped buckle or a clasp of medieval date. The frame has slightly convex sides, with transverse ridges in from each corner. The moulded outer edge is narrowed at its centre to possibly accommodate the original folding sheet or roller which has now been lost. The frame's bar is also narrowed and offset. As the plate (and pin) is missing it cannot be established whether this frame was from a buckle or a clasp. For rectangular buckle frames see Egan and Pritchard (1991, 96; fig. 61), and for clasps see ibid. (118; fig. 77). The frame ha…

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of probably post-medieval date with pin and plate attached. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface and on the pin bar; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section with the pin still attached (L.: 18.7mm), and with the sheet plate looped around it. The pin is of thick wire construction and has been bent to one side following old damage. It has corroded to a dull red/brown colour. The plate is formed of a s…

A small cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing part of its corroded iron pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is shallowly bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. The buckle frame has a mid-/dark-green patina. Buckles of this size with double oval frames have been found in late medieval contexts (cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 82-83; refs. 341), but as the…

A corroded cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame, incomplete in as much it is missing its pin. The pin bar extends beyond the edges in pointed lobes. The reverse is flat, and the frame bevelled internally and externally on its upper surface. This latter is decorated on each outer edge by a very worn five-petalled rosette with three outer petals and three inner. Viewed in profile one of the loops have been bent upwards slightly, and another downwards, as a result of old damage. The pin bar has also been raised slightly at the centre. The buckle has corroded…

A cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing part of its corroded iron pin. The frame is formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve; they are slightly asymmetrical. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. Around, as implied, is an iron concretion - the corroded pin. There is further iron corrosion product on one of the outer edges. The buckle frame has a mid-/dark-green patina w…

A fragment from the sheet plate of medieval copper-alloy buckle. The plate would have been of folded sheet construction. It is shield shaped, with an abraded terminal that may have been angled but rounded. The frame end is slightly abraded but appears to be straight with small expansions beyond the curved sides. The fold features three holes for absent rivets, arranged in a triangle with two towards the frame end. An incised border extends around the plate. Within this are finely incised zigzags formed by rockerarm that almost abut the pair of rivet holes. The fold has been bent and b…

A corroded and bent cast asymmetrical double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date. This example is incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. One loop of the buckle is D-shaped, the other is sub-trapezoidal. The former features a centrally protruding moulded knop on its outer edge. The lower surface of the buckle is flat and undecorated. By contrast, the upper surface features deeply cut decoration which forms moulded ridges, other than the pin bar. The buckle has corroded to a mid-/dark-green colour. The artefact is significantly bent in profile with the trapezoidal loop twi…

A cast copper-alloy double-looped annular buckle with moulded floral decoration, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The buckle is broadly in the form of a five-petalled flower, with the moulded petals irregular sizes, and one more straight than cusped. The petals seem to be plain although the artefact is corroded. The pin bar is central and trapezoidal in cross-section. Iron corrosion product around its centre, as well as on the outer edge between two petals, reveals that the pin was made of iron. The lower surface of the artefact is flat and plain; the upper surface is be…

A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The oval loop appears intact, simply moved apart, slightly to one side, freeing it from the frame. There is a simple rectangular ridge at the junction of the loop and the shaft. The pin tapers slightly to a squared off, blunted tip, recessed slightly on its underside. The object has now corroded to a mid-grey colour with some fine diagonal file marks. Similar examples of pins illustrated in Ega…

A bent and corroded cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of post-medieval date, incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. The frame is formed of a pair of ovals which incurve towards the pin bar. The upper surface is decorated by moulded vine scroll ornament cast within a sunken field. There are perhaps two lis facing inwards at the centre of each outer edge. Buckle with similar ornament can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 68) where they are dated to the period 1550-1650 AD and also on this database HAMP-091C57. A complete cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle of medieval date with sheet roller. The rectangular frame has slightly convex sides, with flat surfaces. The outer edge is narrowed at its centre to accommodate a folding sheet roller which survives in situ, slightly abraded. The frame's bar is also subtly narrowed and has a slight recess where the pin is still in place. The pin measures 12.4mm and is of simple, drawn wire construction. A parallel for this type of buckle can be found illustrated in Griffiths et al. (2007, 99; ref. 689). The frame has a variable mid-grey colour with sma…
