A fragment Early-medieval copper-alloy openwork Anglo-Scandinavian buckle. The two lower parallel projections broadly form a D shape in plan and would have formed the pin bar and loop. A cast copper alloy Early Medieval buckle dating from c. 900- 1100 AD. It is D-shaped in plan with a narrowed strap bar. The terminals of the loop are zoomorphic in form with the strap bar connecting two heads of animals; their mouths are open, almost as though they are biting the bar. These are stylised animals seen on various objects from this period and could be dogs/dragons/dolphins; it is difficult to see. They have a rounded head with inset eyes and an elongated snout. There is a transverse notch for the pin of the apex of the loop. The pin and plate are missing. The bu…

An incomplete and corroded copper-alloy rectangular plate, probably a buckle plate, of possible Early Medieval date. This artefact is rectangular in plan and flat in section. Two circular rivet holes are visible at the end of this artefact where this plate would have attached to a secondary lower plate; the attachment end is absent. Red brown corrosion remains around these two holes on the upper surface suggesting that these rivets might have been made in iron; this artefact has a green colour overall. The body of the plate is decorated with a series of punched dot and circle detail o…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D-shaped rounded section buckle frame with zoomorphic decoration in the form of beast snouts grasping either end of the narrowed strap bar. The beasts are represented deftly but schematically, with a slight constriction between snout and eyes, and a further slight hollowing between head and ears. An off-centre notch on the frame may indicate either a made or worn pin rest. The decorative form is Anglo-Scandinavian, though similar examples are reported from both contemporary and residual contexts. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 950-1050. Length: 24.9mm, …

Cast copper-alloy buckle frame with integral plate in corroded condition. The frame is single loop and sub-round with a central triangular knop on the outer edge, reminiscent of a zoomorphic head, flanked by foliate knops. Silver-gilt buckle with a triangular plate, recently broken in two pieces. The oval loop, of D shaped section, is cast in one with the plate. It has a false shield-on-tongue composed of two stepped, crescentic panels, each decorated with a band of interlace now obscured by corrosion. The base of the tongue is an elongated oval, the tip is now missing. At the junction of the loop and plate, on each side of the narrow flange bordering the latter, is a garnet-inlaid collared boss with a beaded rim.
