A fragment of a ceramic vessel of uncertain date. The fragment is a body sherd with hard and coarse fabric of a dark brownish-orange colour. Numerous small quartz inclusions are present within the fabric. The fragment is 52.5mm long, 23.8mm wide, 10mm thick and weighs 15.5g. Generic fabric types such as this with no specific diagnostic features can be difficult to date precisely and range from Iron Age to medieval in date. However, it seems probable that this sherd is from a hand made vessel which suggests an earlier date.

Possibly pottery body sherd. Crucible fragment. Dark grey hard reduced fabric with a bubbled and vitreous coating inside and out, markedly thicker on the outside, and on the ?lower part of the vessel wall. A vessel diameter of circa 180mm might be inferred - it remains uncertain where on the vessel wall this sherd derives from. This object is potentially important evidence for non ferrous metalworking or other high temperature processes such as glassworking, and may complement other industrial evidence from the same site. The sherd was kindly examined by Wallace Collyer of the North L…

An incomplete spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is missing part of one end due to old breaks but is otherwise intact. The whorl appears to be formed from fired grey/brown clay. It is circular in form, oval shaped in section with a large central circular aperture and very smooth, regular surfaces. It measures 21.62mm in length, 30.13mm in external diameter, 11.31mm in internal diameter, and 24.24g in weight. This is a ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is possible that it dates as early as the Anglo-Saxon period, although a later date cannot be ruled out entirely.

10 fragments of tile of uncertain date. Two fragments are distinctly curved, probably from roof tiles, and all are bright brick red, but the fabrics vary. One has lenses of white clay and pink clay, and large lumps of white clay. Others are a more uniform orange colour throughout. Some have quartz inclusions. Some are darker red with small black inclusions. Many are sanded on one face. They are all 13 - 18mm thick. The tiles could date from the Roman, Medieval or Post Medieval periods.

Two body sherds from very abraded handmade vessels with worn surfaces and some burning in places. They have a coarse fabric with gritty inclusions and some clay pellets, as well as possible organic material in one of the sherds. They have a combined total weight of 36.70g. The precise date of these sherds remains uncertain. It is possible thay are of later Iron Age date, however an Early Anglo-Saxon or even Medieval date cannot be ruled out entirely due to the abraded nature of the sherds.

Two pieces of brick of unknown date. A large rectangular brick measuring 270.6mm in length 115mm wide and 60mm in thickness. The brick has been unevenly fired and is a buff orange-red to brown colour. In the centre of the brick a U-shaped channel has been hand cut. The channel was probably intended to carry water. The base of the brick is flat and the top is irregular due to breaks. The brick is an unusually large size. The exact date of the object is unknown. An incomplete fragment of brick of uncertain date. An abraded base sherd possibly from a Roman vessel. It has an irregular shape. It is has a flat base with little sagging. One wall emerges at an angle of c. 140 degrees. The vessel has a light-grey interior but is an oxidised mid/light-orange colour on the internal surface, greyer on the base. It has fairly even shell tempering with some fragments up to c. 2.5mm long. It may be from the Roman kilns at Harrold, however a medieval date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A sherd from a hand made (not wheel-thrown) ceramic vessel of unknown date. The sherd is a wall sherd and is strongly curved, suggesting it is from a small globular vessel. The striations in the clay are not uni-directinal as in wheel thrown pots, and instead, there are deep finger marks showing where clay has been pushed, perhaps into a mould? The outer face is very smooth but has small flat areas. The reverse is uneven and wiped in different directions. There appear to be two layers of clay forming the wall of the vessel. The fabric is hard and has fine but worn breaks. The surface …

Two openwork pieces of triangular lead, joined at each corner. There are ceramic fragments between the peices of lead, which are orange with a dark grey core; the fabric has mica inclusions. The ceramic extends beyond the edges of the triangle. The lead could be a form of pot mend, however it is unusual in construction. The fabric could be late Roman in date. The lead is 34.77mm long, 28.09mm, with each layer lead being 3.2mm thick. The ceramic is 5.3mm thick. It weighs 31.6 grams.
