An awl or piercer on a pointed triangular flake of dark brown nodular flint. The lower straight left margin is cortically backed and the distal margin is flaked and sharpened from use towards the point. This use damage continues part way down the sharp right margin. Butler(2005) illustrates piercers on page 186, fig 76, 1-5.

An awl, dark brown in colour with cream flecks, which has been uni-facially retouched and expediently made. The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits partial retouch of semi-abrupt angle and is of edge extent. Snapping has occurred at the proximal end. Bond (2005) illustrates a similar example on p135, fig 5.121, F57 which dates to the Early Neolithic.

An awl, light grey with cream inclusions, unifacially retouched and expediently made. The dorsal face possesses discontinuous retouch of low angle and edge extent to the proximal end forming a serrated or cutting edge. Thinning of the face in the central and distal areas allow for more comfortable handling. Snapping has occurred at the left margin and proximal end intersect. Piercing function appears to have resulted from retouch to the right margin and proximal intersect which forms a potential piercing point. Mercer illustrates an example on p135, fig59, L145.

An awl, dark grey in colour with light grey inclusions which has been unifacially retouched and expediently made. The left margin of the dorsal face exhibits continuous retouch of semi-abrupt angle and is of edge type extent forming a point at the proximal end. Similar retouch on the ventral face improves awl functionality. The point looks to have been snapped. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar example on p137, fig 60, L159 which dates to the Early Neolithic

An awl, dark grey in colour, which has been bifacially retouched and expediently made. A notch has been created on the left margin close to the proximal end of the dorsal face with the proximal end itself having been retouched close to the intersect with the left margin to enhance awl functionality. This retouch has been carried out in a similar fashion on the ventral face to further improve function. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on p143, fig5.129, F153 which dates to the Late Neolithic.

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a piercer worked up on the edge of a D-shaped slice from a pebble. The proximal and distal ends are not clean. Most of the dorsal face is cortexed. There is retouch along all but the straight breakage. Ther eis a small sharp, fresh point near the centre of the curved right margin. Most of the retouch to form the point has been done from the ventral face, which shows some scars. . The flint is mottled grey and brown in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble by the look of its primary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrate…

Description by Nicholas Thomas: This is a piercer. The proximal left and right margins have been retouched from the ventral face to form a piercer. The point is perhaps damaged or worn. The ventral right distal margin shows possible use wear. The flint is grey in colour with red cortex. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear even with primary cortex cortex. MERCER (1981) illustrates a similar piece on Page 135 Fig 59 No L151 and L156 and Page 137 Fig 60 No L159 and L172, which he calls piercers and dates to the Neolithic period. Similar pieces…

The distal tip (point) is broken. The distal retouch has benn worked from the ventral face. The flint is brown in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is unclear with only tertiary cortex. Flint nodular awl with scraper edge, triangular in plan, lozenge in profile and section. Bulb on ventral face, with retouch to a large point at the distal end, possible wear marks on the left of point. A layer of brown cortex covers the proximal end and half of the dorsal face, with scraper retouch from the proximal end two thirds up the right edge. The flint is dark brown colour with grey smoke. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 113, Fig. 45, No. 8, which is dated to the Mesolithic.

Flint awl, ovoid in plan and a narrow triangle in profile. The dorsal side has a concave surface. The distal end is retouched to a tiny sharp point. The proximal end has bi-lateral hinge fracturing ending in a point. The left margin has a denticulated edge and on the upper right margin there is a notch. The ventral side has a flat surface ending in a fractured concavity at the proximal end. There is some damage on the mid left margin. The flint is dark to mid grey in colouring. This piece may have been heated as it is "nobbly". The point has been retouched on all sides, so it may be described as an awl. The base is probably the ventral face, but this is difficult to define because the piece is abraded. The flint is dark grey in colour with white inclusions. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble by the look of its secondary cortex. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar piece on Page 169 Fig 71 No 4 which he calls a piercer and dates to the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age.

There is no telling which way is up as the ventral face is without ripples or bulb. The dorsal face has invasive pressure flaking and what appears to be the tip has been broken off. It appears to be too thick for an arrowhead. The piece is very abraded. The flint is yellow grey in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm with only tertiary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar piece on Page 135 Fig 59 No L151 which he calls a piercer and dates to the Neolithic.

The piece is the shape of a three sided pyramid. One face is from a hinge fracture. The others have varying degrees of retouch and long flake removals to flatten them towards a point at the distal end. The left distal shoulder is finely serrated. The flint is dark grey in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm with only tertiary cortex. Mercer (1981) illustrates a similar piece on Page 137 Fig 60 No L163 which he calls a piercer and dates to the Neolithic.

The Swiss army knife of all tools. Each end of this blade has a sharp point. The right dorsal margin has a notch towards the distal end and the left margin is denticulated. However, all are abraded. Both faces are completely flat. The point at the ?proximal? tip has been retouched as an awl. The flint is dark grey in colour with cream specks. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm with only tertiary cortex. The ventral face has a bulb and bulbal scar. The proximal butt is flat on the left and rounded about the bulb on the right. The distal tip has cortex. The dorsal face has a central ridge with flake removals to either side. The margins are "pinched" towards each other and there is some suggestion of "pecked" retouch, the left dorsal margin may have been retouched from the ventral face. The awl tip has retouch on both sides. The flint is dark grey in colour with white cortex. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm with only tertiary cort…

The ventral face has a bulb and ripples. The bulb area has been retouched to create the point. The distal end has been snapped flat. the dorsal face has a medial ridge with semi-abrupt flake removals towards each margin. The left dorsal margin has fine abrupt retouch to create serrations and deeper denticulations in the proximal half. The right dorsal margin has a chamfered flake removal above an abrupt removal with fine serrations. The whole is badly abraded. The flint is light grey in colour. It is probably derived from a local beach pebble but this is difficult to confirm w…

The dorsal face ha sa left of medial ridge, flattened, with an almost abrupt flake removal to the left margin from distal to central, where a small notch has been formed on a shoulder of the less steep flake removal to the proximal end.
