Possibly Copper alloy whistle. Cast tube with a pair of opposed rectangular slots at one end and a metal plate or reed within it at the other; an apparently separately cast and collared mouthpiece is attached at the slotted end. The tubular element bears the stamped legend: J. HUDSON & Co / Birmingham / 1916, which may supply an apt date. The manufacture of a whistle in Birmingham may suggest it was intended for military or police use as such objects would more usually be home made in an agricultural setting. Suggested date: Modern. Length: 62.1mm, Diameter (mouthpiece): 18.2mm, …

Broad period: ROMAN
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey micaceous Mudstone possible hone fragment. Fragment from a possible hone; a needle or point sharpening groove of width 3mm runs along the one unbroken edge. The use of such stone, perhaps derived from glacial Drift, may argue an early date and local manufacture. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length:49.6mm, Width: 20.2mm, Thickness: 13.3mm, Weight: 15.10gms.

Norwegian Schist hone fragment. Rectangular section mullion of schist, worn on all its sides and markedly dished on one of its narrower sides. Broken at both ends. Norwegian honestones from quarries near Telemark came to dominate the English market for sharpening stones throughout the Middle Ages. This object is of an intermediate size between personal hones - often carried suspended - and more unwieldy workshop or kitchen hones .The shape is conferred by the cleavage of the stone along its bedding planes. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length: 93.2mm, Width: 34.2mm, Thickn…

Schist, possibly Norwegian Possible Hone fragment. Small fragment from a mullion of schist. The angled end and part of one side appear smoothed; other surfaces are probably broken. If the identification is sustained, this could be a small piece of a medieval whetstone; the English market for hones was dominated by Norwegian schists through the Medieval period. In the later medieval period, it is possible that undressed mullions of schist were imported to be either shaped or worn to shape by the purchaser. Suggested date: Possibly Medieval, 1300-1500. Copper alloy Wheel. Probably pressed metal flanged wheel with three round apertures and a lug, probably one half of a two-part pulley wheel. The flange has opposed spurs probably relating to its function; the hub of the wheel projects externally and is dimpled within, it was probably gripped externally by paired brackets. Possibly from a domestic pulley system, as used to raise and lower indoor clothes drying racks; similar objects also served to route bell pull wires where domestic servants were employed, and for related purposes. Lead and copper alloy weight. Cast lead weight with inset copper alloy object, possibly a fragment of a Late Roman coin - it resembles a bearded bust trimmed from a radiate issue of circa 260-275, though this appearance may be fortuitous. The lead is patinated overall. The use of weights with insets is considered characteristic of Viking Age activity. This example was either casually made or has been partly melted. Its mass falls within 0.3gms of a Viking Dublin unit of 4.43gms. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Length: 19.2mm, Width: 15.7mm, Thickness: 3.9mm, Weight: 4.71gms.

Lead possible weight. Cast irregularly conical weight with off-centre longitudinal aperture of diameter 5mm. At the broader end the aperture is surrounded by an oval hollow of length 10mm, revealed by removal of fine red sandy soil. The mass of the object may relate it to Scandinavian-derived units of circa 24.4gms (plus or minus 0.8gms). However, such weights are not usually perforated, so use as a later ?fishing weight is possible. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval 850-1500 Diameter (base): 16.5mm, Height: 22mm, Weight: 25.16gms

Lead and shell probable weight. Cowrie shell filled with lead. The shell was trimmed opposite its diagnostic vulva-shaped opening to permit lead to be poured into it; a little lead protrudes at the natural opening of the shell. Once solidified, the lead may itself have been trimmed flat. Though cowrie shells are among exotica characteristic of 'Final Phase' furnished Anglo-Saxon burials, the insertion of other objects into lead weights is more strongly associated with the Anglo-Scandinavian period. Units of 4.07gms and 4.43 gms are respectively associated with Scandinavia and Viking A…

Lead unidentified object. Cast flat-based conical object with extremely irregular sides, perhaps cast in a hole made by pressing a little fingertip in a bed of coarse sand. The mass could indicate this to represent 4 units of a Scandinavian weight measurement system based on modules of 4.07gms, but the form and poor finish are both unusual rfor such an object. Lead Weight. Cast conical weight. An indentation of the base surrounds a central longitudinal hole of diameter 5mm and depth 15mm; it does not appear likely that the hole continued much further, and it may have received a dowel peg. The mass might indicate this represents one averdepois pound or one Tower mark of 160 pennyweight (233gms) - the Tower Weight system was used for bread as well as for coinage, though for either system the weight is probably too heavy.. Further weights, of this form and others, were reported from the same location. Suggested date: Possibly Medieval, 1300…

Lead Weight. Cast conical Weight. An indentation of the base surrounds a central longitudinal hole of diameter 5mm and depth circa 15mm. The mass might suggest this represented three averdepois ounces, though the match is inexact. Round weights of 80 and 85gms are included in the published account of the David Rogers Collection of lead weights (Biggs and Withers 2000, pages 25-6). Further weights, of this form and others, have been reported from the same location as this one.
