Pottery and lead vessel repair of potsherd. Mended sherd of reduced fabric with oxidised external surface and a thick white slip within; a dribble of splashed glaze appears on the outer surface. A blob of lead has been used to mend a cavity of depth 2.9mm on the inside, though this flaw did not carry through the vessel wall. Cast flat-backed plate with cross-hatched central field of lozenges in relief and seven concave settings, three on one side and four on the other; a circular boss at one end of the object has a similar central setting. Copper-alloy zoomorphic handle attached to a wrought-iron key. The handle is formed as the fore-quarters of a male lion with jaws slightly agape and with its maned head resting on outstretched front legs. The modelling of muzzle, head, paws and posture is notably naturalistic - the maker had clearly seen a lion. The ears are held back, and the mane is represented by shorthand modelling of tousled hair. On the underside, the space between the forelegs is also modeled, though without textural detailing. The lion emerges from three pointed oval leaves or petals, which themselves spring f…
