Record ID: NLM-9E8165
Object type: STUD
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron Stud. Wrought Iron stud with a broad straight-sided domed head and a short pointed shank of rectangular section. The good condition should probably argue a relatively recent date. This object would be apt to the reinforcement of a hefty door; the short shank does not suggest a role in the joining of major structural elements, which would more usually be achieved by carpentry. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Length (overall): 53.6mm, Width (head): 55mm by 59mm, Weight: circa 245gms.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire

Iron possible tool bit. Wrought Iron shank with spatulate end. Heavily corroded, which has conferred a possibly misleading rectilinear section, and bent at its narrower end. Suggested date: Unknown, Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1100-1800. Length: 102mm, Width: 21mm, Thickness: 13mm, Weight: 51.32gms.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron probable brooch fragment. Wrought iron coil of spring and pin of a wire brooch, a very simple form of bow brooch related to the La Tene III style but locally considered (at Dragonby - May 1996, page 235) as a possible local development of that form. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100 BC-AD100. Length: 44.5mm, Width: 11mm, Thickness: circa 5mm (corroded), Weight: 3.59gms.

Object type: SCREW
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy and iron possible screw. An iron shank sheathed in copper alloy, with three turns of a finely inscribed screw thread on its outer surface. Corroded iron projects from one end; the other appears to have been cut with heavy shears. The mass may suggest further iron within the object, which is perhaps treated to retard corrosion while retaining strength. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Length: 29.8mm, Diameter (mid shaft): 6.1mm, Weight: 7.26gms.

Object type: FISH HOOK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead and iron possible fish hook fragment. Cast sub-spherical lead weight with mould line bearing an apparently curved iron shank protruding from opposite sides. An identification as a pin head was entertained, but pin shanks of iron are relatively rare, would not be curved, and would not protrude from both sides of a separate head. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Diameter: 9mm, Thickness: 6.6mm, Length: 11.2mm, Weight: 2.90gms.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron possible hinge strap fragment. Wrought iron strip of rectangular section with a flattened oval end; the object is broken at its other end next to a circular hole of estimated diameter 7mm. This identification was kindly offered by Dr Kevin Leahy. Given there is only a single hole for a nail to attach the putative strap to a door or shutter, and given that the hole is far from its finished end, an alternative interpretation as a tine detached from a tool such as a hay rake or eel spear might also be entertained. The finder's suggestion that this could be a weapon fragment is not s…

Object type: SLICKER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Wrought Iron possible slicker or drawknife. Possible blade, though now lacking a clear V-section, with one handle remaining of an original pair which, if the identification is sustained, would be set at either end of the blade. This tool would be used in currying leather to scrape dirt from the inside of a hide, and to rub in and remove grease. Suggested date: Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. Length: 62mm, Width: 13mm, thickness: 7mm, Weight: 16.22gms.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Wrought Iron nails. Two near-complete hand made nails and three other nail shank fragments (a-e); the most complete nail (d) probably had a flat rounded head. The making of nails by a blacksmith would produce a rectilinear section, as opposed to the round section of modern mechanically drawn nail shanks. The process of manufacture remained effectively unchanged through the Medieval and Post-Medieval period. Suggested date: Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1200-1800. Lengths and Weights: a) L 135mm W 38.54gms, b) L 68mm W 16.79gms, c) L 58mm W 5.47gms, d) L 54mm W 10.74gms, e) L 37mm W …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Wrought Iron horseshoe. Horseshoe of Clark Type 4 (1995; Horseshoes in The Medieval Horse and its Equipment: Medieval Finds from Excavations in London, London, HMSO, pages 75-101) . The most notable feature is the relatively narrow space between the branches of the shoe, which approaches the configuration of a pointed arch. One calkin remains at one end of one branch, the other branch end was probably feathered. The web is broader (circa 46mm) and the shoe heavier than as specified by Clark (an average weight of 230 g with a web of width 30mm; the additional weight may have resulted f…

Iron key. Wrought iron rotary key with oval bow, moulded shank and a bit with two wards with three clefts apiece; it is likely that a narrower pin at the end of the shank has been lost. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850. Length: 128.1mm, Width (bow): 43.8mm, Diameter (moulding on shank): 13.2mm, Thickness (bit): 9.8mm, Weight: 90.19gms.
